Miller Says He Followed Usual Practice Minot, N. D., April 27.—(7)—Emil G. Ranum, formerly vice president of @ bank at Van Hook, was freed Fri- day in federal court in Minot on two charges of misapplication of bank funds and one of making false entries upon the bank books. The two application counts in the indictment were dismissed upon mo- tion of assistant United States Dist- rict Attorney Harry Lashkowitz, and the false entry count was dismissed upon motion of Attorney John Sulli- van of Mandan, defense counsel, after Judge Andrew Miller had indicated he would do so, if asked. Immediately after the abrupt end- ing of the Ranum trial, which had ‘been underway since Tuesday, the trial of Lee Dillage and Omar Love- land, charged with smuggling wool from Canada into the United States, was begun. Declaring that the bank did not lose anything in the transaction upon which the false entry count was based, Judge Miller said he had no intention of approving the methods used by the bank in recording the transaction. Be sure to use the correct coffee ‘for each method, Your grocer has two Schilling Coffees, identical in flavor, but each is specially prepared for its purpose—each one different in blend, roast and grind. Handled In Usual Way “The government's own witnesses in this matter—the assistant cashier, for instance—had knowledge of the usual way transactions of this char- ‘acter were handled and testified that the methods used were in accordance ‘with the established usage of the bank. “A transaction that truly reflects, n the bank's books, what took place, could not be false. It might be bad Practice, but it would not be false. “I am clear from the evidence pre- sented by the government that the Various transactions were not false.” ‘The court then announced he would Sustain objections by the defense counsel to the introduction of exhibits 502 BROADWAY KENNETH AKERS, Mgr.
