Railroad Employment Discussing the state of the rail-{ roads, a spokesman pointed out the) other day that employment on the) western lines had decreased from 778,590 in 1920 to 373,364 in 1932, a drop of 52 per cent. | At the same time, wages dropped | from 1,386,350,307 in 1920 to $563,179,- | 577 12 years later. | Without argument as to causes, | these figures contain the condensed | Story of one of our great industrial tragedies and one of our greatest problems. Railroad employment is an essential to sound prosperity and, while it has improved some during the last year, it is still far from nor- mal. The railroad spokesman who ad- vanced these figures compared them | with those for southern and eastern| railroads, where the decrease in em- ployment and wages has been rela- tively smaller. He asserted the west- ern roads have been harder hit than the others because they have lost most of their through traffic to the Panama Canal and because they are not permitted to make competing rates. There doubtless are other impor- tant factors but, whatever they are, we in this midland country should be interested in getting them straight- ened out. Railroad men with 20) years of “rights” have been on the extra list for several years now. Only the oldest of the veterans can hold| steady runs—and draw paychecks| regularly. The figures certainly prove that the railroads and their employes de- serve some kind of a new deal. A Heroism That Puts Life Into History History never gets really interest- ing until it gets down from its high stool, shuts up its heavy ledgers, and starts telling us about the little, un- moticed incidents that high-light great occasions, For these little things are what give the great stories their true fla- vor, Among them there is the case | battlefield of Antietam. On this stretch of Maryland farm- Jand was fought one of the great bat- tles of the Civil War. Lee, swinging back toward Virginia after his first tnvasion of the north in 1862, made ® stand behind Antietam creek and met the onset of McClellan, The fight is recorded as a Union victory, but the northern army was. mangled so badly that, when Lee withdrew across the Potomac, no pursuit was made. At any rate, until a few years ago, the battlefield was studded with more than 80 monuments commemo- rating the deeds of various com- mands. All but one of these—a Con- federate marker erected by the state of Maryland—were Union monuments, ‘Then, one day, a stranger appeared | in the adjacent town of Sharpsburg, | inquiring where he could rent a horse i and wagon to transport a stone to the ‘battlefield. And the next day there I ‘was found on the field a new monu- Wy ment bearing a tablet which read: “Near this spot an abandoned Con- Wederate gun manned by a second lieutenant of the Sixth Virginia in- fantry, Mahone's brigade, and two volunteers from Anderson's Georgia brigade, was placed in action Sept. 17, 1862.” ‘That's all! No one, to this day, knows who put the marker there; no of the mysterious monument on the|V@Station of aviation stock prices that ago, was all the work of a 10- boy who liked to see the flames. self who verifies this amazing fact, The youngster readily confessed everything. He told how he had set the blaze, had scampered home to read & school textbook entitled—of all things—“Good Citizenship,” and then had returned to watch the disastrous conflagration he had caused. As soon as he had made this bizarre confession, the lad was lodged in a detention home to await the arrival of learned psychiatrists, who were to question him in an effort to find out what on earth possessed him. In a case like this, we bump against one of the most tragic and puzzling riddles that life can offer. In it we face one of those queer, in- comprehensible quirks that crop out every now and then to bewilder and dismay us. Such things remind us that we do not know nearly as much about the main-springs of human behavior as we think we do. Why should an in- telligent, pleasant-faced child give way to an insane impulse like this, any- way? How could the adults who have charge of his training have foreseen such a thing? What can be done, now that the catastrophe has taken place, to keep the lad’s life from being wrecked, and make it possible for him to develop into a happy and useful member of society? We know the answers to none of those questions. But out of the gen- eral bewilderment we can, perhaps, draw a new understanding of the ob- ligation that lies upon all adults in respect to children; the obligation to try to understand, to sympathize, to be as wise and helpful as our limi- tations permit. The world of childhood is a strange Place, and it can be peopled by queer, | What Is This—A Game? It was the governor of Illinois him- JZ ls A | H VE 4 SPO ee ee a Pa ing for public drinking.
