L. Simmons, New Eng- land, Shares Honors With State President ‘Mrs, John Knauf, Jamestown, presi- dent of the North Dakota Federation of Women’s clubs and director for this state, and Mrs. E. L, Simmons, New England, vice president of the state federation, were the honor guests at the Liberal Arts club’s an- nual guest day dinner held Thursday evening at the Inn. There were 21 guests. Amber tapers, a low crystal bowl filled with jonquils and valentine place cards, arranged by Mrs. V. J. LaRose graced the long table at which Mrs. Knauf and Miss Clarice Belk, president of the club, occupied the first places. After the dinner, Miss Belk briefly welcomed the guests and introduced Mrs. Knauf and Mrs. Simmons before the group was taken to the home of ‘Mrs. LaRose for a program, during which Miss Belk also presided. Mrs. Knauf informally sketched prominent club personalities present at the general federation board ses- sions recently held at Washington, D. C’ She touched briefly on the feder- ation’s support of Senate Bill 2000 ing a new food and drug act and also told about the 1933-34 Pan- American girl and the woman stu- dent who now holds the federation’s medical scholarship, After Mrs. Simmons gave a short ta’k, Miss Maude A. Tollefson, a Lib- eral Art culb member, sang an Italian selection, “A, Se to Dormi” from Vaz- zaj’s “Romeo and Juliet” and two of Amy Woodford Finden’s love lyrics, “The Temple Bells” and “Less Than the Dust.” Dr. Maysil Williams, club speaker for the evening, talked on the Civil Works Service nursing project and -the effect it will have in North Da- kota. Miss Virginia Wright of Mandan, a guest of the club, played six piano numbers, “B Flat Major Intermezzo” by Brahms, “Andalucia” by Lecuona, “The Chinese Dance” by Bainbridge Crist, “May Night” by Palmgren and two Eugene Goosens numbers, “The Old Musical Box” and “The Hurdy Gurdy Man.” Mrs. F. H, Waldo, a club member, reviewed “A Modern Tragedy” by Phyllis Bentley, English authoress, wich was released in New York Thursday. In_an informal talk, Mrs. Florence H. Davis, eighth federated district president and founder of the Liberal Arts club, made a plea for the study and expression of North Dakota’s beauty, particularly through develop- ment of clay modeling and apprecia- tion of the wild flowers. To illustrate her talk, she used figurines made from clay and soap and a cabinet of wild flower slides prepared by Russell Reid, superintendent of the State His- torical society, Mrs. LaRose, vice president of the chtb and social chairman, prepared the program. After it was concluded she served frappe and cakes, Owen Gives, Main Talk Before Political Club A large group of members and friends of Women’s Nonpartisan club No. 1 met Thursday evening at the World War Memorial building dining room for a program with Owen T. Owen, state beer commissioner, as the speaker. Letters received from U. 8. Senator Lynn J. Frazier and Congressman J. H. Sinclair in reply to resolutions sent them from the club, assured the group that Frazier and Sinclair are doing all they can to retain the Northern Great Plains experiment station south of Mandan and to procure the neces- sary appropriation for that purpose. Mrs, Alfred 8. Dale, who represents the club at the Community Council, gave a report on the work being done for under-nourished children in the schools, the day nursery and other measures of community interest.
