WELCH Combining and threshing were »at their height this week, and by the end of next week will practically all be done in’ this vicinity. Some few fields yielded as much as 12 bushels per acre but such fields were scarce. Some fields of feed grain were har- vested only for the sake of obtaining seed for next year. Corn fields in this vicinity are practically entire iailures, owing to drought, grasshop- pers and smut. The smut pestilence has become very bad here in the last two or three years. Mrs. C. K. Boyd entertained about, twenty children at her home Thurs- day afternoon. Mrs. Boyd’s mother, ‘Mrs. M. E. Funston, and sister, Ella Funston, assisted her. Outdoor games were used as entertainment. ‘In the evening a dainty lunch was served. All the little people reported a very good time. Mrs. John Welch, Mrs. Luella Bird, Miss Anna Doppler and Mrs. Robert Welch called at the Boyd home in the evening. Mrs. Luella Bird and little daughter Betty accompanied by Miss Anna Doppler, visited and dined at the George Varnum home Friday evening. Mrs, Bird and Miss Doppler have been suffering from ivy poisoning this week after their. trip to the river bottom for fruit a week ago. Master Dallas Kershaw had to have. his arm broken again and reset, when it was found that it was not knitting properly. The arm was first broken six weeks ago, A brother Albert, who also had his arm broken about two weeks ago, is getting along nicely. Mrs. R. L. Anderson and small daughters of Minneapolis, visited Jast week with Mrs. Anderson's brother- in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Mel- vin Thorsen, of Moffit. She and her daughter, Avis Carlisle, left Sunday for a weeks’ visit at the Century of Progress in Chicago. Pete Schlosser, who lives near Kin- tyre, made a business call here last week. Anton Thompson of Cushing, Wis., father of Mr. Nels Thompson, died at the home of his son here August 3 of pneumonia. Mr. Thompson spent his-summers here at the home of his son, and his kindly qualities endeared him to all wha knew him. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson have the sincere sym- pathy of a large circle of friends in their bereavement. Visitors at the W. H. Mr. Stanton who has taught here the past year has been attending the normal school at Valley City during the summer session.
