W. of Underwood AT THE ‘Hell Below’ Submarine Melodrama Packed With Excitement Thundering thrills of naval bat- tles, adventure unheard of, under the surface of the sea, and an intimate panorama of the sailors of the sub- ™arine fleet form a huge background for romance in “Hell Below,” in which Robert Montgomery, Walter Huston, Madge Evans, Jimmy Duran- te, Bugene Pallette, Robert Young ‘nd a large supporting cast are play- ing at the Paramount theater for the next three days. Described by one critic as “The Big Parade of the Ocean,” the spectacular Production, filmed with navy co- operation and with actual submar- ines, gives film fans another of those authenic spectacles such as “Hell Divers” and “Tell It to the Marines.” Montgomery does the finest work of his film career as Lieutenant. Knowlton, who in the end sacrifices his love for his duty. It is a straight, honest portrayal, at all times sympathetic and convincing. Huston, who only recently created the memorable President in “Gabriel Over the White House,” again con- tributes a performance of distinction to the talkies as the stern command- er of the submarine. MOVIES Jack Holt, Fay Wray In Capitol Picture Film audiences have grown to ex- pect a good picture whenever Jack Holt is starred, and “The Woman I Stole,” Columbia's newest film feat- uring this popular actor playing to- morrow at the Capitol theater, is.no exception. There are powerful situa- tions without number, a rapid-fire Plot, and a splendid cast The strength of the picture lies, not oOhly in the unusual love story, but in the dramatic punches and alistic oil-field atmosphere. The locale is an isolated oil-port on the edge of a desert, and there men Struggle bare-handed to achieve per- sonal success. They employ fair means and foul, for the desert wilder- ness permits only the survival of the fittest. Jack Holt, as Jim Bradier, oil ty- coon, who has built up this tremen- dous industry only to toss it aside as @ worn-out plaything, has his usual he-man role, but he portrays it with even more than his customary punch. His love scenes with Fay Wray, a subtle adventuress who, though mar- ried, is willing to destroy her home to gratify her love for Holt, are Powerful and effective. Miss Wray’s interpretation of Vida Corew is a welcome change from her Previous “horror pictures,” She is too splendid an actress to be forever cast in roles which demand only ter- rifled screams.
