THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, MONDAY, JUNE 19, 1933 CONTEST HALF OVER WHEN FOUR CAPITAL “CITY STARS ARRIVE Sagehorn, Feske, Schwartz and Mike Goetz Held Up By Auto Trouble MUSTER BIZARRE OUTFIELD Capital Citians Outscored Magi- cians 2 to 1 With Regu- lar Lineup An unusual Bismarck lineup was de- feated 6 to 2 by Minot in a baseball Game at the Magic City Sunday aft- ernoon. In the outfield for Bismarck for four innings were Assistant Manager ‘Walter “Babe” Mohn, in street clothes and without spikes, and two Minot fans, also in civilian clothes without spikes. Only a part of Bismarck’s team reached Minot in time for the game, the remainder being held up on the road by automobile trouble. When Long John Sagehorn, Fritz Feske, Gus Schwartz and Mike Goetz made their belated appearance, quite tired from cranking and pushing their car in the six-hour trip, the score was 5 to 0 in favor of Minot. The four tardy men took the field ‘without workouts, and from that point. on the Capital City club outplayed the Magicians 2 to 1. Kabeary pitched effectively for the victors, allowing but four hits. Minot succeeded in bunching four of its eight hits off Honey Boy Becker, on the mound for the Capital City team, in the fourth inning. The box score: Bismarck (2) 8. Goetz, 2nd, cf R. Sears, ss B. FULLERTON, JR. (Associated Press Sports Writer) The Washington Senators’ sensa- tional winning streak has been check- ed just when the American League lead almost was in their grasp, Going into Sunday's doubleheader, Washington had won six successive victories and was in position to take the lead by winning two games from the St. Louis Browns if the New York Yankees’ losing streak lasted long enough for them to drop a twin bill to the Chicago White Sox. The Senators negotiated the first step easily enough, slamming George Blaeholder's offerings for 15 hits and a 14-1 triumph but they fizzled out in the second game when homers by Sam West and Bruce Campbell netted the Browns a 3-2 triumph, The Yankees, meanwhile, protect- ed their lead by taking the opener from Chicago 6-4 but the pale hose salvaged something for the largest crowd that ever saw a ball game in Chicago, 53,398, by winning the second clash 5-4 in 10 innings with the aid of a wild throw by 'Wilcy Moore. Detroit took the first game from Philadelphia 3-2 and then went on to slam out an 11-to-7 decision in the second game. Cleveland's pitchers, Oral Hilde- brand and Mel Harder, handed the Boston Red Sox a pair of shutouts, 7-0 and 4-0. The St. Louis Cardinals dropped the second game of a doubleheader to Cincinnati 6-5 after winning the first 13 tol. The Giants got only four hits but grouped half of them with a sacrifice and a wild pitch for two runs in the seventh, to win from Chicago, 2 to 0. The Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Phillies 3-1 while the Pittsburgh Pi- rates hung a double defeat on Bos- ton’s Braves, 5-3 and 4-3. A. U. title meet at Soldier Field, July 1. Owens left officials and spectators amazed Saturday when he won the century in 9.4 seconds. It was not so much of a surprise when Metcalfe hit that figure in the finals of the National Collegiate Athletic Associa- tion meet on the same track Satur-, day night, for he has done it more or less frequently. Most of the stars who shattered records all over the place in the N. C. A. A, meet will remain to try for A. A. U. titles. Glen Cunningham of Kansas, who ran the mile in 4 min- utes, 9.8 seconds for the fastest time ever achieved by an American; Char- les Hornbostel of Indiana, who de- feated the Kansan in a terrific bat- tle for the half-mile title, in 1:50.9, tieing Ben Eastman’s unofficial world at Jamestown as a spectator, shot a 41, one under women’s par, in a prac- tice round. Sigafoos, who had trials with De- |troit and Cincinnati, Sunday hit safe~ ly in both games of a doubleheader to run his string to 38 straight games, The former record was 36, set by Bob Fisher of Minneapolis, in 1921. Sigafoos’ hitting failed to keep the Indians from taking two beatings from Columbus, 9 to 4 and 3 to 1, how- ever. St. Paul made a sweep of its two-game series with Minneapolis by winning 7 to 3, and Toledo did a lot of hitting to take two games from Louise ville, 9 to 3 and 11 to 4.
