Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, one of his former lieutenants who has been active in the conferences of Indian leaders to reach a compro- mise during the last two days, vis- ited the Mahatma and said after-|¢ ward he hoped an agreement would be reached before the day is over which would enable Gandhi to par- take of food again. The Mahatma slept well during the night, lying on a webbed cot under a somewhat shabby mango tree in the yard in front of the jail. When he awoke he conducted his morning prayers as usual. Predictions were made Thursday following @ long heart-to-heart talk between the conference leaders and Gandhi, that an agreement would be worked out Friday, but his closest friends felt tense about the situation, fearing at the last minute he might pick out some flaw in the proposed agreement and refuse to accept it. It calls for joint electorates for the higher caste Hindus and the Un- touchables, with safeguards for the latter. The part on which agreement has been reached concerns prim: and final elections for Untoychable representatives in the legislatures. The chief difficulty, however, was ever the insistence of Dr. Shimrao orig i Ambekdar, leader of 60,000,- 000 Untouchables, for appointments of Untouchables in the government service, provision of funds for edu- cational facilities and the right to appeal to the viceroy. si Gandhi issued an appeal to the people of India to refrain from fast- ing with him and insisting that in- stead of this they set about doing all in their power to remove the stigma of Untouchability. | Ene ae Dr. Beebe Boasts i New Diving Mark patch Meth Mioicvoratcth Hamilton, Bermuda, Sept. 23.— (®)—A new deep sea diving mark of nearly a half mile was added to the world’s records Friday. Dr. William Beebe, New York scientist, and Otis Barton, inven- tor of the “Bathysphere,” a new- ly-devised diving apparatus, de- scended 2,200 feet below the sur- face of the Atlantic Thursday, and broadcast their impressions over the radio from the depths. The 2,200 feet was several hun- dred feet farther down than Dr. Beebe, noted as a deep sea ex- plorer, had ever been. The “Bathysphere” protected them from a pressure of 4,800 tons, enough to have flattened both of them if the apparatus had failed. The experiment was made seven miles off Nonsuch Island, Bermuda, from the tug “Free- dom.” Dr. Beebe hoped to reach 3,000 feet but was prevented from do- ing so by leakage of the sea water in a stuffing box through which the electric light cables entered the driving apparatus. The scientists said they had seen many ocean marvels of great scientific value at the newly ex- plored depth. The boy was returning home from school when he leaped upon the run- ning board of a truck. After riding a short distance he fell off and a wheel of the truck ran over his arm, causing multiple compound fractures of the arm and elbow and injuring the flesh. He was brought to a local hospital where physicians said Fri- day it may be impossible to save the arm from amputation. Farmer Near Wishek Loses Arm in Mishap Christ Roth, farmer living near Wishek, suffered the loss of his right arm Thursday as the result of an accident which occurred while he was threshing on his farm. Roths right arm became caught in the machine and was so badly man- gled that it was found necessary to amputate it just below the elbow when he was brought to a hospital here Thursday evening. | Fargoan Succumbs To Bullet Wound La Crosse, Wis., Sept. 23.—(AP) —George Stewart, 28, of Fargo, N.
