BUYING POWER OF FARMERS MUST BE RAISED, NYE SAYS) Says People Will Not Find Be- ginning of Recovery on Market Pages Minot, N. D., July 29.—(@)—When People get théir noses off the stock market page and come to a full real- ization that the return of prosperity will not first be noted there, but will occur when the purchasing power of agriculture is returned, then recovery from present conditions will be speed- ed, Senator Gerald P. Nye said in Mi- not Friday. Too much attention has been paid to stocks and too much legislation has been enacted to improve conditions on the theory that if the prices of stocks raise, prosperity will return, in the belief of Senator Nye. Restore the purchasing power of agriculture, and stocks will take care of themselves, he thinks. The North Dakota senator has made observation that the industrial east is coming to the same belief he maintains, but not fast enough, he éays, Regarding the coming presidential election, Senator Nye said what he previously has declared, that his ac- tivity in the campaign will principally have to do with obtaining re-election of himself, and not work in behalf of any presidential candidate. People Fully Capable He believes the people are fully ca- pable of deciding for themselves whom they want for president, and doubts whether anything he might do would make much difference in the outcome of the presidential race. Referring to the fact that he cam- paigned for Hoover four years ago, the senator said he is not “particu- larly proud” of some of the promises he made at that time, regarding what might be expected to be carried out in event of Hoover's election. “I think the president has fallen down badly on what he might have done out in the agricultural regions,” Senator Nye said. “Whether anyone else would have done better is a ques- tion.” To the question of what presiden- tial candidate he intends to vote for next November, the senator said he did not prefer to answer at this time but declared that he believed that the people, some time prior to the elec- tion, are entiled to know where their public officers stand on the question, “even though it may not make much difference to the voters.” The senator came to Minot Thurs- Seriously Injured In Fall from Horse New England, N. Local Man’s Brother Saved from Drowning Ludwig Quanrud and a cousin o Theodore Quanrud of Bismarck, was saved from drowning near Bagley, day evening from Bismarck, where he attended a meeting of Republican nominees, called by William Langer, gubernatorial nominee. Lauds Langer’s Motive Regarding the proposals of Langer to initiate several proposed laws, which were looked upon by disfavor by a majority of the nominees and other league leaders present, Senator Nye said it might appear Langer is in bad light by reason of the fact his Fropesals were not approved, but the as sire to do something worthwhile for the state. However, Senator Nye feels that with the league-controlled legislature scheduled to convene within about two months after the general elec- tion, the proposals might better be submitted to it for careful study, rather than putting a mass of pro- Posed legislation before 200,000 voters. many of whom would lack an intelli- gent understanding by reason of no: having studied it.
