I have read with some interest a also an editorial in the same issue of The Tribune, by yourself. I feel that submit a few facts. Recently one of our largest department stores advertised that on a certain Saturday it would put on an anniversary sale. On that day its sales amounted to the enorm- ous sum of $225,000, that in com- parison to a similar sale held one year ago which amounted to $65,000, ond then, we say “there is no money to be had Here in our own Bis- marck, on Saturday, May 7th, one » Very progressive grocery house, which, judging by its advertising, is very much alive, sold for cash, goods to the amount of $3,600, about equal to an ordinary grocery stock. And as the years roll by this can not May 24, 1932. It was with considerable interest the writer read the recent articles in The Tribune relative to the real es- tate operations of the Bank of North Right at the beginning, some ar- rangement should have been made roviding for taxes on state owned Anyone with any foresight at all must have realized that sooner or later some farms will be foreclosed by the Bank of North Dakota. These farms lie but a short distance apart. | Their ery, “taxation without repre- The same thing is going on all over |sentation is tyranny,” might .well be- turned over to the counties in which said lands are situated. This would prevent state competition with farm- ers growing grain crops. School lands are not permitted to be broken up and we think any farms foreclosed on by the state should be treated in a similar manner, with the same re- strictions. Farmers buying state owned or other farms on the half crop pay- ment plan have found it almost im- possible to pay for their farms under any such arrangement. We would favor a law whereby all parties hav- jing interest in any lands share taxes jon a@ pro rata basis. As it is, when a man makes a small down payment fhe not only must pay back principal and interest but must shoulder the entire tax burden. This is manifestly unfair. Older states than North Da- kota have come to their senses and enacted laws benefiting the resident farmer instead of rich land owners who sell chiefly for the reason that their taxes will be paid, they will get good interest on inflated values of land, and finally within the next few years can foreclose and get it back again. Our forefathers went to war with England for less provocation than cur Ameriian farmers are forced to undergo under present conditions. come “taxation without end is bank- ruptcy.” It means the same thing in the long run. They fought for their homes. So must the American farmer fight for his, both with inside and outside interests. And, when the state itself lines up with his enemies, where can the farmer look for help? As Mr. Meyers said in a recent article in the Forum, “We must turn out every elected of- ficer and start a new deal all around.” We must not only do this, we must be thoroughly cognizant as to where each and every candidate stands.
