ST-ALEXIUS BUSY LAST YEAR, ANNUAL REPORT INDIGATES 2,162 Patients of 22 Denomin- ations and 20 Nationali- | ties Were Treated During 1931 St. Alexius hospital here cared for 2,162 patients of 22 different religious denominations, 20 different nationalities and 108 differ- ent occupations, according to the an- nual report of the institution made public Friday. Of the total number, 988 were males and 1,174 were fe- males, while 58 of the total were ambulance cases. ‘The report, issued annually in print- ed form by the hospital management, is dedicated this year to Sister M. Boniface, superintendent of the hos- pital for the last 40 years and for 60 years a member of the nuns of the Order of St. Benedict. Sister Boni- face is widely known throughout the state and is credited with having built up St. Alexius hospital from a fron- tier station of mercy and succor to one of North Dakota's finest eleemosy- nary institutions. When Sister Boniface came here 40 years ago there were five Benedictine sisters and five doctors attached to the hospital with a daily average of four or five patients. Class A Institution Today the hospital is rated by the American College of Surgeons as a class A institution, has a staff of 25 members, a school of nursing recog- nized by the National League of Nurs- ing Education and a modern depart- mental hospital organization. The list of religious denominations treated at the hospital last year in- cludes 62 Baptists, 1,097 Catholics, 74 Congregationalists, 319 Lutherans, 114 Methodists, 113 Presbyterians and 281 persons with no religion. Included in the list was one each of the Men- nonite, Mormon and United Brethren faiths. Americans led the nationalities with 1,765. There were 13 Austrians, 11 Bohemians, 28 Canadians, 47 Ger- mans, 19 Hungarians, 21 Norwegians, 210 Russians and 13 Swedes. No oth- er nationality provided as many as 10 patients. In the occupational classification 289 were listed as “at home” and 181 were babies. There were 10 book- keepers, 9 clergymen, 16 clerks, 27 do- mestics, 13 engineers, 175 farmers, 42 housekeepers, 631 housewives, 112 la- borers, 20 mechanics, 18 miners, 48 nurses, 23 salesmen, 64 retired per- sons, 10 stenographers, 210 students, 35 teachers and 14 truck drivers, Complete classification is made in the report of all infectious and gen- eral diseases. Among those affecting 10 or more patients were: bronchial pneumonia 18, influenza 26, lobar pneumonia 24, diabetes mellitus 26, acute alcoholism 14, Two-Sccre From Mishaps Two-score injuries from accidents were listed, of which 13 were listed as multipl contusions, 11 as fracturts ‘of the radius and ulna, 12 as sprains of the sacroiliac joint and 12 as wounds and lacerations of the scalp. Of the deaths occurring at the hos- pital, six were due to cerebral hemorr- hage, thrve were due to cholecystitis, eight to premature birth, five to bronchial pneumonia, five to acute gangrenous appendicitis, five to mul- tole burns and three to arterioscler-- osis, . The pathological laboratory made thousands of examinations, including 4,184 urinalyses, 1,219 white and 618 red blood counts, 658 hemoglobin tests and 1,057 differentials.
