” Chrysler Is Almost Completely ‘Changed in Last Seven Seasons Despite This Fact, 1924 Model in Its Day Was Consid- ered a Leader ' By §. W. CORWIN Corwin-Churchill Motors, Inc. There is an old saying that every- thing changes every seven years. Ap- Plied to the automobile, it seems to have a certain amount of truth, for a check-up of the specifications of the new Chrysler models against those of the original Chrysler, which made its appearance in January, 1924, reveals that there has been progress amount- ing to almost a complete change, even in a fundamental principle. Corwin-Churchill Motors, Inc., is Chrysler dealer in Bismarek. _ The Chrysler of 1924 was accepted by the public as well in advance of its times. It was as near deserving the term “revolutionary” as any car ever prodiiced. Yet this now obsolete car lacked so many of the features since developed by Chrysler that by comparison with the new models, it seems almost a relic of the “covered wagon” era. There have been nearly 60 major improvements: and literally hundreds | . of detail changes in the Chrysler car since 1924. A large percentage of these major improvements might be listed as fundamental betterments. The change in fundamental prin- ciple is floating power. By this new method of engine suspension, abso- lutely no vibration reaches the driver or passengers in the car. That this change in fundamental principle is not only practical but the biggest step forward in motor car construc- tion in two decades, is proved by the more than 100,000 floating power Plymouth cars now in use throughout the world. Here are some of the really import- ant engineering advancements that have been made by this corporation since Walter P. Chrysler first put his name on a motor car: The silver dome high-compression. engine, which uses ordinary grades of fuel for greater acceleration. more power, increased climbing ability and Sreater economy. Internal-expanding, hydraulic brakes. The conventional rubber engine mounting—a forerunner of floating Power, Crankshaft torsional impulse neu- tralizer. High-frequency valve springs. In fact, Detroit registrations put it in first place during July, Au- gust and September. The long oval rad- lator shell introduced last year by Oldsmobile has been retained with modifications, while new lines of hood and cowl accentuate the additional length of chassis and bodies. The profuse, but artistic, use of chrom- jum plating provides an exterior trim- ming in keeping with the luxurious finish of the interiors. Officials of the company state that never in the nearly 35 year history of the car has an Oldsmobile contained so many new features which improve driving ease, riding comfort and such Performance characteristics as accel- eration, speed, hill climbing and safety. Selective Ride Regulator Among the more important of these new features are a selective ride regulator with dash control and double-action hydraulic shock ab- sorbers; free wheeling with improved synchro-mesh transmission and silent second gear; an engine decarbonizer; full automatic choke; improved down-draft manifolding and carbure- tion on both the Six and the Eight, with dual carburetion and manifold- ing on the eight-cylinder engine; high compression cylinder head; automatic ‘heat control; oll temperature regula- tor; longer, 11612 inch wheel base; and complete rubber insulation between engine and chassis, and chassis and body. The six-cylinder engine has been given added power by increasing the bore and enlarging the valves. It develops 74 horse power at 3200 rev- olutions per minute. The new Oldsmobile Straight Eight has a 3-inch bore and a 4%-inch stroke with a 240.3 cubic inch dis- Placement. It dvelops 87 horse power at 3350 r.p.m. It is of L-head con- struction. The chief’ difference be- tween the two engines is in the car- buretion and manifolding. The Eight has a duplex carburetion and intake manifold with separate leads to two sets of four cylinders each, thus pro- viding equal fuel distribution to all cylinders, The decorbonizer unit enables an owner to remove carbon from com- bustion chamber and valve stems without effort and at a minimum cost. Just Presses Plunger When engine performance indicates the presence of carbon, an owner, on driving into his garage at night, simply speeds up the engine to ap- proximately 50 miles an hour, presses the plunger with his foot and shuts off his ignition. The following morn- ing he starts his engine as usual and the carbon, loosened by the action of the decarbonizer fluid on the gummy binder, is blown out through the ex- haust. The automatic choke is another jfeature that will be appreciated by automobile owners. A thermostatic coil located adjacent to the wall o fthe exhaust manifold joperates the automatic choke. When ; the engine is cold the choke is fully effective in starting. As the engine ;Warms the choking gradually dimin- jishes giving the proper mixture at ‘all times. Another automatic feature is the manifold heat control. This valve reg- ulates the amount of exhaust gas by- Passed through the heater body and is operated by a thermostatic ele- ment. A further provision for efficient en- gine operation is found in the oil temperature regulator. This is a small radiator element of the honey-| comb type located just above the oil} and water pumps. Effective All Year This regulator is equally effective in winter and summer, When the en- gine is cold most of the oil is by- Passed around the cooling radiator. As the engine temperature increases the by-pass valve gradually closes, sending the oil. Several improvements have been made in the cooling system. Starting ease has been increased through the automatic choke and a starter and throttle hookup. This lat- ter feature automatically advances the throttle to a fast “idle” when the starter pedal is depressed. In line with the many insulation features of the 1932 Oldsmobiles, a new type engine mounting has been designed to more thoroughly damp- en vibration. At the front end, the mountings are set in rubber-at a sci- entifically determined angle, while at the rear two “biscuit” type rubber mountings are used. A torque-reac- tion stabilizer to check any periodic vibrations at low speed is fastened, through rubber, to the frame and transmission housing. Transmission development has been as far reaching as have engine im- provements, Free wheeling and the improved syncro-mesh transmission simplify driving and make car oper- ation still quieter. Free wheeling control is through a4 button on the dash just below the in- strument panel. Improvements to the syncro-mesh transmission, such as the designing of new synchronizer springs, new heat treat processes and the exact match- ing of gears into sets provide a silent second gear, Chrysler Six Five -Passenger Sedan : | Longer and lower than any previous Chrysler Six is the 1932 sedan model pictured above. Featuring floating Power and free-wheeling, this car offers the automatic clutch and shatterproof glass at nominal extra cost. Five wire wheels are standard equipment with six wire or wood wheels optional at extra cost. The entire transmission unit has/ been designed for ease of operation,| quietness and safety. 4 Comfort Is Regulated Riding comfort in relation to load or road conditions is controllable by the driver through double-action hy- draulic shock absorbers and a ride regulator. From front, side or rear the lines of the 1932 Oldsmobiles reflect the ar- tistry of the designers. The deep, gracefully curved radiator shell has been retained and forms the center motif of the frontal design. On each side low, full crowned fenders spread out in distinctive curves and these are connected across the front of the radiator by a double chromium tie bar containing the Oldsmobile name- Plate in the center. Fastened above the tie rods on each side are new large diameter, bullet type, chromium head lamps. Directly beneath the head lamps are two matched tone, or synchronized horns of the latest style of trumpet type projectors, also chrome plated. At the top center of each fender are parking lights. A broad, single bar bumper, curv- ing forward in front of the radiator, and an ornamental radiator cap of bird design complete the front end appearance, : The hood is of new, modern design fitted with ventilation doors instead of louvers. All exterior enameled sheet metal work is made from heavy, one-piece stampings designed with contours to match the treatment of the body lines and to bring out the balanced, symmetrical effect of the whole as- sembly. : Has Sloping Windshield ‘The stream-lined appearance of the car is furthered by the sloping wind- shield and the absence of the conven- tional sun visor. The rear appearance of the 1932 Oldsmobile is particularly pleasing due in a great measure to the curves of roof and sides. The same type bumper as the one in front is used on the back whether or not a spare connection with the engine; rubber pads insulate the springs from the frame and the muffler and exhaust Pipe are similarly insulated. This year the door and side panels, where there is a possibility of vibra- tion and subsequent “drumming” sounds occurring are lined with a heavy insulating material. Bodies are of the well known Fish- er-built composite wood and metal construction, amply braced at points of stress and featuring “open joints” where squeaks might occur. The instrument panel is particular- ly striking in appearance as well as having easy visibility and handy op- erating controls. Instruments are grouped in a panel which bevels for- ward toward the driver. At the extreme left of the dash board is located the ride regulator control. wid The light control operates the tilt ray head lamps and the parking lights. The head lamps can be changed from touring to city driving range through a foot button located at the left of the steering wheel col- umn. Ventilation Is Complete Complete ventilation is provided through a cowl ventilator operated from under the instrument panel and the VV Fisher windshield. Body types of the standard Olds- mobile Six and Eight are: two-door sedan, business coupe, four-door se- dan, sport coupe, convertible road- ster and patrician four-door sedan. Six wheels, either painted wood, natural wood or wire, with fender wells, hold-down irons and locks; trunk platform, white side wall tires, chrome plated trim rings for the wheels and snap-on chrome plated spokes for wire whels may be secured at slight additional cost.
