For Adminis- tration, Engineering, Main- tenance in 1931 ‘New construction of state roads and bridges took 71.25 cents of the North Dakota highway dollar in 1931, while 28.75 cents: went for administration, engineering and maintenance, figures announced Friday by A. D. McKin- non, chief highway engineer, show. The 1931 expenditures totaled $6,- 420,000, of which $4,524,000 was for new construction, $1,298,000 for main- tenance of state highways, $468,000 for administration and engineering, Warns Engineers to Watch Road Weights Because of the approach of the spring break-up, division engineers of the state highway department have been asked to enforce a statute set- ting the maximum load allowable on state highways. Chief Highway Commissioner A. D. McKinnon instructed the engineers to keep a careful watch on the condition of state highways, and authorized them to restrict the weight of vehicles “whenever any highway by reason of deterioration, rain, snow or other climatic conditions will be seriously damaged or destroyed” unless the use of vehicles is prohibited or the permis- sible weights reduced.
