Robinson comes to the Paramount Theatre today, in his latest characterization, that of the heroic Wong Low Get in “The Hatchet Man,” a First National and Vitaphone adaptation of a play by ‘Achmed Abdullah and the late David Belasco. Gorgeously staged and photo- graphed, the thrilling scenes of the} melodramatic romance are laid in China—at Hangkow and on the ‘Yangtze river—and in the Chinatown of San Francisco. Mr. Robinson who won recognition as the greatest char- acter actor of the acreen in “Little Caesar,” “Smart Money” and “Five Star Final’—presents an utterly dif- ferent character in “The Hatchet As the Honorable Mr. Wong he is commanded by his tong to execute an enemy, Sun Yet Sen, who had been ‘@ boyhood friend. Sun wills Wong all his property, and secures his promise to marry his daughter, Toya San, then but six. The story recounts the exciting adventures of Mr. Wong as Protector, and later as husband of pretty Toya San—whom he gives up! to her half-caste lover—and finally rescues from slavery, in old China. Brilliantly directed by William A. ‘Wellman, the play is unique in star support, situations and settings. CAPITOL THEATRE One of the most notorious dives of the Pacific coast was used as a back- ground for the remarkable romance of clipper ship days depicted in “Shang- haied Love,” a Norman Springer story! featuring Richard Cromwell, Noah Beery and Sally Blane at the Capitol Theatre today and Saturday. Long before the’ earthquake laid San Francisco in smoldering ruins and old Chinatown and the Barbary coast in ashes, there was located in the toughest section of Frisco’s water front a sailor's dive commonly. known as the “Tub of Blood.” Strange to relate, this hell hole which, in the days of the clipper ships, was owned and managed by the “Knitting Swede,” was one of the few buildings that withstood the ravages of the earthquake.
