Some short covering was in evidence by operators who were evening up. Rumors than the farm board had sold or would sell 15,000,000 bushels of wheat to China had no effect. Corn averaged slightly higher with ship- ping sales of 215,000 bushels of cash corn having some effect. Crop re- ports continued spotted.. Receipts: Wheat 39 cars; corn 42; oats 54. ‘Wheat closed firm, unchanged to % cent higher than Thursday’s finish, Sept. 46%-'%; Dec. 49%-%; May 53% -54. Corn stronger, unchanged to % higher, Sept. 44%-%; Dec. 39%-%; May 43% -44. Oats uneven, % down to % ad- vanced, and provisions also. uneven, ranging from 2 cents decline to 3 cents higher. Only moderate interest was dis- played in any of the grain markets, and trade was largely of an evening up character for the holidays. Septem- ber closed 1% cents higher, December 1% cents higher and May % cents: higher. Corn futures were strong on Chi- cago cash sales, which so far for the week have totaled close to 1,000,000 bushels. There was little movement in oats or rye. Barley was stronger and buying of cash interests was bet- ter. Flax was down on scattered com- mission house offerings. Wheat receipts were light and the cash tone was strong. Some of the grain was fed last year but many farmers were slow to put it in the feed bins because it was a new thing in their experience. Reports to the agriculture depart- ; | ment this year, however, indicate that | the continued price decline has broken dewn inhibitions. The department and the farm board approve. Experts say there, is little difference in the nutritive values of @ bushel of wheat and a bushel of en the last few months, they cal- culated; wheat has been much cheaper than corn for feeding purposes.
