D., May 5.—Sunday was a bad day for the Sayler family, several members of which live south- west of here, but a good day for fires. A high wind blew sparks from a smoldering ash heap against Chris- tian Sayler’s barn, about eight miles southwest of here, and it was de- stroyed early in the afternoon. About 7 p. m., lightning struck the house occupied by Rudolf Sayler, six miles southwest, and it also burned. He managed to save only the radio and a few minor articles. Underwood firemen hastened to the burning house but were powerless to check the flames. The Christian Sayler barn was pro- tected by insurance but the Rudolf Sayler home was only partia!ly in- sured, Urges Auto Tag Losers To Notify Authorities Failure to report the loss of one of his automobile license tags was the cause of much embarassment to A. W. Olson, Pembina school teacher, and mignt have resulted in his being arrested and brought to Bismarck to answer forgery charges, according to J. L. Kelley, Burleigh covnty sheriff. A man who gave his name as J. 8. Warner ena J. 8. Nordquist cashed number of worthless checks in marck Friday, Kelley said. An at- tendant at a local filling station where one of the checks was cashed made a penciled notation of the li- cense number of the car driven by the maker 0 {the spurious checks. In the resulting investigation Kelley learned through the motor vehicle; registrar that the license number had been to Olson for the same type of car as driven by the check swindler. Fortunately for Olson, the Pem- bina superintendent of schools was able to vevrify the fact that he had conducted classes in the high school Friday and could not have been in Bismarck. Among its products wer2 ships tor Napoleon. | MEMBERSHIP MARK State Department Now Has 9,750 Members; Old Record Was 9,667 Fargo, May 5—(?)—The North Da- kota department of the American Le. gion Tuesday had more members than at any time iw the history of the organization and a final spurt is being made to bring the roster high enough to give the state the place of honor at the national Legion conven- tion in Detroit. Monday 9,750 former service men had signed their 1931 cards, it was announced at the state headquarters here, as compared with the previous high mark of 9,667 in 1922. By May 12 the department expects to have at least 10,000 members signed. Reports from the national Legion office at Indianapolis said Tuesday the state stands third in the United States in potentional membership percentage. Arizona and Florida are first and second. The percentage is used in deter- mining ranking in the national pa- rade at the national meeting the week begining Sept. 21. Seating at the national convention also is to be deter- mined through the rating. The percentage will be compiled from figures in the national office by May 15. N. D. IS TOLD BY AVIATOR LOST IN WILDERNESS Italian Flier Rescued in Brazil But His Mechanic Hanged Self to Tree Sao Paulo, Brazil, May 5—(P)— The story of a 13-day journey through the wilderness on foot, end- Di Robilant, Italian flier, and the sui- cide of his mechanic, Mauranta Quar- anta, stirred public interest Tuesday. ‘The Italian consul said Di Robilant told him Quaranta hanged himself to the limb of a tree with his own belt rather than endure longer the suf- fering of starvation and fever. The filers left Sao Paulo April 12 and were forced down the next day near Pirajury. Earlier reports said the mechanic died in a hospital at San Jose as a result of his experiences. As told to the consul, the fliers en- countered a storm four hours out of Sao Paulo and were forced down in the jungle. Leaving the plane un- damaged, they started back towards civilization with marmalade and hardtack their only provisions. Mosquitoes harassed them. Ants devoured their food. Constant wad- ing of,streams sapped their energy. Loss of their matches in the water left them without means to build a fire, ‘They subsisted for days on| what fish they could catch with their hands and the fruit they could find. On the 11th day, Quaranta plead- ed he could go no farther and insist- ed Di Robilant push on without him. The latter reached the Parana River; two days later and an Indian took him to San Jose by canoe.
