10° All Maj CUBS TRP PIRATE IN ONLY BATTLE IN - BIG LEAGUE RANKS St. Louis - Cincinnati Games Postponed Because of Wet Grounds Friday WILSON IS ‘OUT OF SLUMP Pittsburgh Moves to Cincinnati and St. Louis to Chicago for Next Clash (By The Associated Press) For the fans who like their double headers in May and June, there was a catch in Friday's program that saw the Chicago Cubs beat the Pitts- burgh Pirates 5 to 4 in the only big league contest. Only two games were scheduled Fri- day as the entire American League and half the National took a day off before the first big week end. The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds were forced to postpone their clash at Cincinnati on account of wet grounds. Manager Rogers Hornsby of the Cubs put his team into undisputed possession of third place in the Na- tional League after young Charley ‘Wood's pitching had almost stopped the Chicago sluggers. After shutting out the Cubs with two hits in five innings and fanning five, Wood weak- ened in the sixth and gave two runs. Then with two on base in the seventh, the Rajah clouted his second home run of the season. This proved to be the winning tally as Pittsburgh got to Guy Bush in the closing inn- ings for three runs and Sweetland and Bob Smith were called in to stop them just short of a tie. Hack Wilson finally broke his hit- ting slump with a single but twice in the early innings he failed to con- nect when runners were on base. All the big teams are due to go into action Saturday. Pittsburgh moves to Cincinnati and St. Louis to Chicago in the only changes of the previous schedules. In the first four games under the Rajah’s leadership, the Cubs not only won three games for a flying start but they answered the speculation that they wouldn’t draw the crowds any | more because of McCarthy's dismissal | by attracting approximately 105,000 | customers or an average of about 26,- | 000 @ game. Defensive- ‘ly, he handled 28 chances with but one error on @ viciously hit ground mning back on the grass and getting pop flies and was a pivotal point in three lightning double plays. One Hornsby method of play that has pleased the customers is his in- struction to pitchers to play the bat- ter and not the runner. The hurlers have been told to let the catcher and the infield do most of the worrying about the base runners and they like it. Seldom did a Cub pitcher attempt to catch a runner off the bag unless the catch looked good. Consequently, the games have been speeded up—the the control of the swing into the body. The power behind the carpenter's hammer comes from the cocking of the wrist and not the muscle or the body. Try swinging a hammer with an uncocked wrist and you will note the lack of power. Remember the wrists are the hinges of your golf swing connec! the hands with the body; if they are stiff and not working freely they act the same as a rusty hinge on a door. A cocked wrist gives you that need- ed distance. I know of many golfers who can outdrive players twice their size and strength through their abil- ity to use the wrists properly.
