The treasury statement showing the total collections for the month re- Ported that for the first nine months of the fiscal year income tax had amounted to $1,506,281,238 as compar- ed with $1,612,137,844 in the same per-, iod of last year. Not more than $350, ey 000,000 is expected from this source in the last quarter which would bring the total income tax for the year to $1,856,000,000 as compared with §2,- 410,986,977 in 1930. The collections for the last day of March were $3,093,463 as compared be $3,523,172 for the same day in Chae revenue kept pace with the decline in income taxes. The indica- tion was that the total revenue to be collected by the government for the fiscal year would amount to probably not more than $2,250,000,000 and that the government would end the year next with a deficit of $700,000,000 or more. Increasing expenditures, which for nine months amounted to $3,126,540,- 319 as compared to $2,932,209,145 last year, indicated the government would have to raise funds through substan- tial security sales. The gross public debt increased $352,000,000 during March to total $16,582,868,436 at the month end. A year ago it was $16,389,624,566.
