THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1980 BATTLE T0 CONTROL ORE DEPOSIT LOOMS "British, Germans Germans and Americans Seek Beryllium Fields in Canada Toronto, 1.—(P)—An interna- tional battle va financial interests loomed today for control of what is believed to be a large. and valuable deposit of beryl, a valuable mineral from which is derived the metal beryllium, about 100 miles north of Winnipeg, Man. * Dr. T. L, Walker, professor of min- eralogy at the University of Toronto, who has just completed an inspection of the property with W. P. Jacob, field scientist of the beryllium de- velopment corporation of America, said the showing of beryl on the Hur- .on river claim is the most promising he has seen anywhere in the world. Beryllium is about half the weight pf aluminum and three times as strong. Heretofore it has been known chiefly as a laboratory product be- cause of its limited supply. Its cost of $200 a pound made it prohibitive for commercial purposes. Should the Manitoba find justify expectations the metal could be produced at $5 a pound. Scientists pointed out it would be of great importance in the construction of airplane and automo- bile bodies and as an alloy to iron, nickel and copper. Efforts to obtain control of the deposits are being waged by British American and German interests.
