A score of Bismarck Ro- tarians attended the annual affair— q|the largest delegation present, at least from North Dakota, George Duemeland, it was brought out, made elaborate arrangements for the accommodation of the Bismarck party. However, at the last moment, the three Rotary-Anns listed to ac- company their husbands from here, changed their minds. Duemeland sent on a telegram: “Bismarck Rotary-Anns back | Cancel their reservations.” The telegraphic operator thought | there was an orthographic error in the telegram. So the Duluth hotel where the local delegation had made reservations received this: “Bismarck Rotarians back out. However, City Auditor Atkinson will ask Mr. Weinberger for a payroll list and check up on it to ascertain whether theré are any men on the operation who are keeping a Bismarck man out of a job where the latter would be entitled to preference. Many New Residents Idle City Auditor Atkinson commented that the prospect of work here this spring, due to the several buitding operations and the gas line construc- tion, had brought in a lot of laborers last winter. These, he said, are still here and many are on the verge of distress. It was decided to treat such cases on their merits. Married Bis- marck men or,sons who have invalid or crippled parents to support will be given first consideration, then un- married Bismarck men, and, on their merits, the cases of newcomers of, last winter will be handled for the most Good to all. Until the situation had been cleared up by Manager Trimble, there was much muttering by the protesting idle against what they thought was dis- crimination against Bismarck labor, but which Manager.
