© 5° THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, TUESDAY, MAY 20, 1930 Unarmed Youth Gets $2,495| {In Minnesota Arrested Few Hours Later, He Reveals Screwdriver Was His Only Weapon Mankato, Minn., May 20.—(4)—Ar- rested a few hours after he had held yup and robbed the Farmers State bank of Rapidan, near here, of $2,495 late yesterday, Harvey A. Lindsey, 22, was in jail here today while author- ities pondered what charge to place against him. p Lindsey was unarmed when he robbed the bank. He intimidated the employes by using a screw driver which he pointed through his over- coat pocket. Because he had no gun, county officials were considering charging him only with first degree grand larceny instead of bank rob- Rery. Married and the father of two chil- dren, Lindsey said he rented an auto- gobile and robbed the bank so he could pay his bills. “It was a case of getting more money or starving to death,” the youth told Frank E. Morse, Blue Earth county attorney. Shortly after he returned the rent- ed car and paid for using it, Lindsey went to his grocer, meat dealer, and other creditors and paid off $70 in bills. Earned Little Money “I was awfully hard up,” he said. “I couldn't think of any other way of getting money so I decided to hold up the bank. I worked as a sales- man, selling food products and toilet , articles to farmers, but didn’t make much money. I have two children and a wife to support and it looked like we would have to starve unless { I got some money. “I did not have a gun so I put a screw driver in my right hand over coat pocket and pushed it out to make it bulge when I held up the man at the Rapidan bank. You know, I entered the bank an hour previously with the intention of hold- ing it up but I guess I lost my nerve. So I asked the man in the bank where ‘Torgerson’ lived. He told me I bet- ter ask some other people around town, so I left. I drove around in my “hired car and then decided to return because I had to get some money.” County officials doubted whether Lindsey could be convicted under that section of the state laws mak- ing robbery of a bank punishable by life imprisonment since the youth did not carry a gun. In view of this situation, they considered a charge of first degree grand larceny, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years upon conviction. It was the first time, Lindsey said, he had ventured in the field of crime. He was arrested at his home after his wife had informed officers her hus- band was “up town.” They waited until Lindsey arrived. The screw driver which he used as a weapon was in his pocket. Automobile Proved Undoing Renting of the automobile from a garage at Madelia apparently proved the undoing of the youth. A resident of Vernon Center who became suspi- cious of Lindsey's actions shortly aft- er the holdup took the license num- ger and gave it to authorities. The Vernon Center resident, hear- ing a description of the bank bandit over the radio, observed it tallied with that of Lindsey. Authorities traced the automobile to the garage where Lindsey had hired the car. The gar- age owner told officers the renter’s name, saying the latter had “rented it in the morning and used it most of the day.” “At first it was believed the bandit | ‘was accompanied by a woman, but investigation by County Attorney ‘kbrse showed Lindsey was alone in the holdup. MINISTERS, MISSIONARIES TO GET OLD-AGE PENSION Indianapolis—(#)—Ministers and missionaries of the Disciples of Christ churches no longer need fear poverty in their old age. Final plans for a contributory pen- sion system will be discussed by about 400 members of the church from the United States and Canada gathering | here April 30 and May 1. Voluntary committees of church members and ministers have been \igfudying the plan in their respective Ttalities for the past two years. Under the pension plan as an- nounced at headquarters here each qualified minister and missionary will pay 2 1-2 per cent of his annual salary to the common fund, and each church will pay the equivalent of 8 per cent of the salary paid to its minister. This revenue will make the plan self-supporting, it is de- clared. For the benefit of ministers for | whom no payments have been mage in past years,’a reserve fund of $8,- 000,000 will be sought to pension those nearing the end of their active chreers. BOME BANS PETTING IN PUBLIC; FINES EACH PAIR Rome. —(?)— Kissing, embracing and otherwise demonstrating affec- | tion, hitherto a concomitant of springtime in most public squares and gardens of Italy, are now frowned on. The metropolitan police are daily and nightly rounding up petters, and inflicting a fine of 20 lire (about $1.05) upon each pair. The Genoese suthoritiey have been equally severe. Romantic Romans retort to the gubernatorial theory of “a place for everything,” meaning that courtship should be carried on in the family Parlor, that the quality of electric ‘#hd gas light supplied by the munici- Ppality is so poor that ardent swains might miss the object of their affec- tions if they tried to osculate indoors. ' ‘SHOOT-TO-HIT’ PREMIUM OFF BOOKS IN KENTUCKY | \ Frankfort, Ky.—(?)—There is no longer a premium for straight shoot- ing in Kentucky. fy Gov. Flem D. Sampson has per- mitted to become law without his signature a bill which corrects an anomoly in the state statutes pro-|' viding a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for shooting without wound- ing. and a maximum of only five yes for wounding. ‘Formerly, no matter how seriously a victim was wounded, his attacker faced a less severe maximum penalty than that provided for a marksman who shot—and missed. Naturally it was to the gun wielder’s advantage | to hit the mark. ‘The legislature raised the maximum for shooting and wounding to 10 years. H., former eastern _ ski-jumping champion, was hanged here today for | the slaying of Dublis Rehberg, a ho-{ tel night clerk. He walked steadily from his cell to the gallows, protesting his innocence to the last. ‘The trap was sprung at 1:12 a. m. and after an inquest the body was turned over to a local minister for burial. Anderson, once a_member of the ; Nansen Ski ¢lub in Berlin, N. H., was convicted of the slaying. of Rehberg @ month after the hotel clerk was found dying from wounds on the head. He values it at $1,500,000. The hawker is Major U. Mohideen, | who presents himself as a Singapore | Jewel dealer. Alleging that he fears | . kidnappers who might force him to give up the jewel, he lives in seclusion | and keeps his treasure in .a bank vault. The major calls the gem “The Pearl Of Asia” and claims it was a gift to the Manchu emperor, Ch’ien Lung from the shah of Persia. Ch'ien Lung sat on the Dragon throne in old Pekin from 1736 to 1796. Where Major Mohideen obtained | the jewel and upon what he bases his claims to its veracity constitute @ secret. PROBE OF UNEMPLOYMENT ON WOMEN VOTERS’ SLATE Louisville—(?)—Because of the j Present unemployment situation the | subject of “stabilizing unemployment” will be given a prominent place on | the program of the convention of the League of Women Voters here April 28-May 3.
