Five Still Missing in Smokehouse Ruins Of Missouri Plant (onan tram ne ones ably next week, will follow, Dr. Tad- lock said. Known dead included Verna Dur- kin 21; Gerald Munden, 22; Ray Rickman, 34; Arthur Rogers, 27; Earl Hansen, 33; Dexter Bowlin, 27; Ma- tilda Loar, 35; and Maggie Willis, 21; Employes reported missing included | James Staples, 26; Joseph Scott, 27; George Roberts, 24; Charles Moore, 26; Frank Weiczarek, 40; L. E. Wiles, 45; Ora Paxson, 22; and Lioya Cox, age unknown. All in One Plant All of the victims were working in a building which housed a combina- tion smoke house, pickle house, and sausage plant. More than 1,000 persons, many of them relatives of the dead, gathered at the main entrance to the packing plant grounds through the night. From their eds in hospitals in- jured employes told the same story— @ plinding flash followed by the roar and the grind of rending brick and timber. The gas blamed for the blast is believed to have leaked from un- derground mains. Deny Ammonia Cause First reports that shattered am- monia tanks were to blame for the explosion later were discounted. Au- thorities pointed out thatthe stored ammonia gas could not have caused such a@ powerful upheaval. Escaping ammonia fumes prevented beginning of immediate rescue opera- tions. Three firemen were overcome by the choking gas. A switch engine on a nearby rail- way track was pressed into service to aid in hauling aside the huge girders that were removed from the debris. Crews of men, tugging at big cables, dragged other portions of the wreck aside. Operations in other buildings of the large plant were not suspended today. Slaughter of animals and shipping was carried on despite the confusion occasioned by rescue work. Bandaged Students Fined After Battle With Cops at Yale (Continued from page one) licemen, their uniforms torn and soiled, went to police headquarters for treatment of minor injuries and returned to the disturbances. The men arrested, 11 students and one salesman, received lacerations and bruises and four were taken to hospitals. The college infirmary de- clined to disclose how many students had been treated there or how many were injured seriously enough to re- main. All Upper Classmen All students arrested were upper classmen and were charged with gen- eral breach of the peace. They were released in $200 bonds each furnished by Dean Clarence W. Mendell of Yale college. William Boardman Mosle, New York City, and John Mc- Ewen, third, Winnetka, Ill, who were among those arrested, Dean Mendel] said, had been sent by him to quell the disturbances and were mistaken by police as rioters. Members of the student council led by Waldo W. Greene, captain of the 1929 football team, aided in ending the disturb- ances. The most serious clash occurred on High street, near Chapel street, where ‘about 200 students erected a wooden barrier across the street. Taunts by | Weather Report i Tamperature at 7 a. m.
