BY LEGION AFFECT 30,000 DAKOTANS t flundreds of Measures Intro- duced in Congress; Com- pensation Again Up Fargo, N. D., Feb. 13.—-A bill spon- Bored by the American Legion, which carries amendments to the World war ‘veterans affecting 20,000 North Da kota veterans and their dependents, is being prepared by Watson B. Miller. chairman of the national rehabilita- tion committee of the Legion, Jack ‘Williams department adjutant, re- ‘ported this week upon his return from ‘Washington. Sections of the act have been found unworkable by the directors of the 'U. 8. Veterans bureau and Legion of- ficials and the amendments are sought to make the changes more suitable, * Hundreds of bills affecting former Bervice men have been introduced in fongress, Mr. Williams declared, and both major parties are looking to the been held over him ever since convic Legion to gather them all together fand prepare suitable legislation. Mr. ‘Miller's office which is maintained by the American Legion, has iore laims filed from veterans of the Inited States than all but five of the 62 veterans bureau regional offices throughout the country, Mr. Williams Baid. He has a large force of special- fists in his employ, who gather to- gether the claims, which have been fefused by the veterans bureau, and @re prosecuting them to obtain com- pensation or hospitalization for the weterans. Included in the legislation which thave been introduced in congress, said (Mr. Williams, is one bill which will extend to March 15, 1931, the final closing date for filling of adjusted fompensation claims. There were 110,000 claims filed after the last losing date, Dec. 31, 1929, including fore than 300 from North Dakota feterans. ‘The great difficulty encountered by former service men in proving claims gue to service, because records were fncomplete, has brought about intro- @uction of legislation which elimi- hates much “red tape.” This bill also will be passed soon, Mr. Williams be- fieves. Other cases will be affected by this bill, including those of veterans | {who are in need of hospitalization but ‘are unable to take care of their fami- lies while being treated. He re- turned without Kadue, on account of the attorney general's office at Springfield refusing to recognize the | extradition papers issued by Governor George Shafer. The Illinois authorities took the view that the alleged false pretence ‘was an incident to a partner ship when Kadue operated the Tourist cafe here. Additional charges were to have been preferred on check transactions and warrants on_these would have been sent on to Deputy Hedstrom to effect extradition, but no further complaints were entered. ‘The deputy found Kadue working in a chain grocery store at Moline, Mllinois. Kadue refused to return here voluntarily, on advice of his counsel. While in Illinois, Deputy Hedstrom had opportunity to visit a brother at Joliet, a nephew at Gary and a niece in Chicago.
