An extra dividend of $3,500,000, however, received by the Northern Pacific from its subsidiary, the North- western Improvement company, prac- tically made up the difference. Earn- ings for 1929 are estimated at between $8.50 and $9 a share. In 1928 the earnings were $8.52 a share. Gross operating revenue for 1929 was $96,522,348 as compared with $101,272,724 in 1928, Net operating income for 1929 was $21,410,344 com- Pared with $25,088,572 in 1928, As a result of the extra dividend from the Northwestern Improvement. company, the road shows a surplus after dividends of about $9,400,000, or about $675,000 in excess of last year. According to a statement by Charles Donnelly, president, the de- crease in 1929 earnings was due al- most entirely to the small grain crop and a decrease in the movement of forest products.
