F. Monroe, director of extension work and chairman of the meeting. The conference, which was called by Dr. E. G. Booth, extension agron- omist, was attended by experts of the United States department of agricul- ture and members of the extension and experimental divisions of the col- lege. Restriction Is Increasing It was the opinion of the conference that the restricted purchase of wheat in certain areas by grain buyers and milling companies is increasing the penalty growers of smutty wheat: must bear. Instances were cited where buyers of several large milling con- cerns absolutely refused to place a bid on smutty wheat. Against such a market situation the wheat growers’ sole defense is to produce grain free from smut—a possibility which is sure of accomplishment once seed treat- ment becomes general, it is believed. R. H. Black, federal grain investi- gator, and C. 8. Fisher, agronomist of the United States department of agriculture, presented charts showing North Dakota towns whose wheat shipments greded from 25 to 50 per cent smutty. Their opinion was that shipments made so far indicate that smut was not so prevalent in the stat~ this year, the principal reasons being laid to the effectiveness of the in- tensive seed treatment work carried on by the extension service in 1929 and to the unfavorable weather con- ditions for smut.
