AFTER DOWNTURNS, WHEAT PRICES CAN ON ARGENTINE NOTE Crop in Southern Hemisphere in Many Places Is Failure Due to Drought Moisture Reports From Canada and Northwest Cause Bears’ Optimism Chicago, bod 11.—()—Pre-holiday phen ma dd accounts constituted the bulk of business today in the wheat market here, and prices aver- aged higher. Export dealings in North American wheat showed more volume, totaling 600,000 bushels, in- cluding domestic hard winter wheat and durums. European importers were said to be displaying signs of in- creased interest in American wheat, which is now actively competing with Argentine wheat for October and November shipment. Wheat closed firm, ‘ic to bushel higher than yesterday's finish. (Dee, 1.35% to 12; March 1.42%; May 1.4615 to 4.) Corn closed unchanged to ic low- er, (Dec, 94% to 95; March 99% to 1.00; May 1.02% to %). Oats also unchanged to ‘ic off, and provisions unchanged to a setback of 15¢. Persistent unfavorable crop re- ports from Argentina, attracted much notice today among wheat traders here, and tended to bring about price rallies, In this connection, state: ments were current that Argenti: government figures do not take into account any acreage abandoned be- cause of crop damage. On the other 1 hand, numerous wheat traders bear- ishly inclined put a good deal of stress today on moisture reports from Canada and from domestic spring wheat territory. Considerable em- phasis was also given to unexpected large shipments from Argentina, 720,000 bushels this week against 077,000 bushels for the corresponding time last year. Some rain was shown over the corn belt, and this circumstance helped to bring about price rallies. Oats were casier. Provisions were under pressure. WEAKNESS IN WHEAT STIMULATES SELLING Minneapolis, Oct. 11.—()—Chicago showed best tone at the opening, rul. ing firm, but weakness in other mar- kets stimulated professional selling and a moderate dip followed. Locally there was a fair demand for choice cash wheat but the general market showed casy tone. trade and shipping inspection were light to fair. Cash wheat bids were off a cent. Heavy weight still wanted. Durum was in scanty supply and in good de- mand, . Winter wheat was nominally un- changed. Fair inquiry and offerings were very light. Corn demand was quiet and offerings were fair. demand was slow. Rye demand was just fair. Barley opened draggy in tone-and quite a few sales were made at 1 cent decline within the ranges quoted. Flax opened slow and steady and later declined 1 to 2 cents compared with futures. Offerings heavier. SOUTH ST. PAUL LIVESTOCK South St. Paul. Oct. 11—()—(U. 8. D. None, however, will be made before spring. The first of the year it will be determined what amount will be available—after payments have been a; |made up to the first of December. And it is impossible to inspect land in the winter for the purpose of de- termining whether the property is good security. Refuse Applications It has been necessary to refuse vir- , |tually all applications for loans sub- mitted since last spring. ‘Those ap- 4 |Plications which were pending when the ban was placed have been con- sidered as money has been paid into , {the department and some loans have been completed. Of great benefit to the department ; {has been the law which made possible private and auction sales of fore- closed lands. This measure became effective July 1. Since that date land sales of 4.777 acres for a total consid- eration of $71,823 have been made— $47,387 on contract and $24,436 for cash, Contract sales cover 3,266 acres and cash sales 1,511 acres. Further benefit of the law to the state is seen in the fact that land sales are now adver- tised in Billings, Emmons, Dunn, Bot: tineau, McHenry and McKenzie coun- ties. At Towner today Mr. Byerly |“ will sell a piece of McKenize county the previous record owner. Since the land department came into being many years ago, 80,000 acres have been foreclosed by the state. In the majority of cases the issue is small. If a bond house can be found which will float the small amount, the expense is great. Thus far, all bonds of this type coming to the attention of the de- partment have been purchased. Improvements are now under way in the department's bookkeeping sys- tem. The record of tax payments of each piece of land on which the de- partment holds a mortgage will be in- cluded under the new arrangement. Heretofore, the department has been at a loss to know whether or not tax payments had been kept up in many instances. The law now pro- vides that these figures be sent to the department.
