D., Aug. 22—(%)—Ap- pointment of 18 new county grain ex- aminers in compliance with the newly enacted grain storage law has been announced by Oliver Knudson, state Grain storage commissioner. Henry Solkuswicz, had been losing chickens from day to day. Watching in the back yard he saw one of his hens swallow something and then squawk. Investigation proved it to be a fishing line coming over the back fence baited with worms. Two small boys with fishing rods, cans of bait and sacks filled with chickens, were discovered on the other side. They escaped but Sol- kuswicz recaptured some of his fowls. LOCAL TRIO INJURED IN TWO CAR CRASHES John T. Carey, Mandan, in Se- rious Condition; Mrs. Carey and Berquist Hurt Three Bismarck and Mandan per- sons and one Jamestown man were injured in two automobile accidents on U. S. highway No. 10 between Bismarck and Jamestown last night and early this morning. John T. Carey, Mandan, Northern Pacific conductor, and his wife to- day are in a Jamestown hospital injuries received when an automobile in which they were riding plunged into a ditch and turned over six miles west of James- town at 12:30 a. m. today. Carey, suffering from a crushed chest, is in serious condition. His wife received numerous _ bruises about the body and head. They were en route to Mandan from De- troit Lakes, Minn., when the acci- dent occurred. Elmer L. Berquist, employed by the Melville Electric company, and Fred W. THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1929 ASK SAME BASIS AS OTHER PROPERTIES Request Is Put to State Board to Make Valuation Equable in All Districts Representatives of North Dakota Power companies today asked the state board of equalization that their Properties be assessed on the same basis as other property in various taxing districts. Alleging that in some taxing dis- tricts taxable valuations are only a fraction of the actual values, they made it plain that they will seek val- uations on the same relative basis as other property throughout the state. They did not, however, attack the taxable valuations as tentatively pre- pared by the state tax department. and it is considered that these schedules will be adopted with- out substantial change. Among those who appeared before the board today were representatives of the Otter Tail Power company, Central Light and Power company, Interstate Power company, Northern Power and Light company, North Da- kota Power and Light company, and Northern States Power company. PLAN BATHGATE SPUR Bathgate, N. D., Aug. 22—A spur from state highway No, 18 to Bath- gate will be constructed, according to word received here from the state highway department. The decision was made when records revealed that an agreement had been made for such & project, although the department two years ago abandoned the practice of constructing spurs to cities and towns. D., Aug. 22.—Tom McDonough, night policeman here, may have only one arm, but it doesn’t Pay to attempt to beat him in the draw for a gun, especially if that gun happens to belong to Tom. A tramp learned that fact here last night, but he paid for it by land- ing in St. Joseph's hospital with a bullet hole through one leg. He had been ordered out of town earlier in the day but returned last evening. ;Tom ordered him to “get out and |Stay out,” whereupon the fellow at- tempted to secure the policeman gun. He wasn't quick enough, how- ever, for Tom beat him and put a bullet through his leg. ‘The wound is not serious. | Wild Whistling Swan Making Home at U. S. Weather Bureau Here A wild whistling swan has been added to the outfit at the govern- ment weather bureau, but not as a part of the weather equipment. “Oscar,” as he has been named, is using the station grounds as a game refuge. Game Warden Erbe placed him there because of the ititerest Ob- server O. W. Roberts takes in wild life and game preservation. The fowl was picked up near Wing by a resident of that town, who turned the bird, which is a young swan, over to Warden Erbe.
