Consumption of flax in 1928 in- creased 5 per cent over any other year, Leo Nemzek, sales director of th Dupont Co., industrial finishes, division said. He added that pros- pects are for further increased con- sumption this year. “Since wheat, and flax are inter- changeable crops and since we are on @ export basis with wheat and an import basis with flax, I think a con- servative increase in flax acreage is | Justified,” Dr. John Lee Coulter, pres- jident of the North Dakota Agricul- tural college, told the meeting. “A corresponding decrease in wheat acre- age is desirable. j. “A study of the relative costs of production and of the relative yield ‘and prices shows conclusively that flax is the better paying crop. The average price of flax is more than double that of wheat but the wheat yield is not double that of flax. ‘The Mecano te tare is the same to the is in favor of flax. “This does not i.ean, however, that the farmer should rush into flax, but if he has clean ground and good seed it: would seem reasonable to plant more flax. There is a definite pros- pect that either the president or con- gfess will raise the tariff on flax ‘sometime before ‘marketed. Flickertail Follies Acts Are Selected Grand Forks, N.
