MONDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1928 GRAIN EXPORTS SHOW DECLINE Price of Wheat Brought Lower Today; Has Little Rallying Power 4 Chicago, Det. 10.—(AP)—Grain prices went lower all around today, affected by a noticeable extent by scattered liquidation sales associated «with stock market weakness. Sell- ing of grain disclosed a lack of buy- ing support, and professional specu- lators inclined to the bear side in all the pits. A decrease of 1,676,000 bushels in the United States wheat visible supply total today failed to act as a counterbalance. Wheat closed unsettled, %@'%sec . % @I1c net lower, Dec. 1.14% @ to sak tiga 1.18%, May 1.20%@ to "Corn Sec to Ta@I1c off, (Dee. 82% to 12, March 85%@% to %, May 8853@% to 12). Oats closed %ec to 12@5ac down, ‘Wee, 47%; March 47%, May 47%@ % to %) and provisions showing 2c to 10c drop. Notwithstanding considerable buy- ing today on the part of general « downward trend much of the time today. It was shown that in the last week, Europe had taken only 9,831,000 bushels from North Amer- ica, a decrease of more than 5,000,- 000 bushels, and this was construed as emphasizing the coonty reduced export buying which had been in evi- dence during November. Mean- while, the amount of wheat afloat for at e today was anncunced as nearly 4,500,000 bushels over the to- tal at this time last year. Favorable veather for the move- ment of corn, together with liberal receipts in Chicago today, 82% cars, had a bearish effect at times on the corn market. Selling of corn into store here tended also to pull prices down. On tke other hand, advices were current that European re- selling o° United States corn of late yvould have to be purchased if Ar- entine clearances diminish sharply as predicted. Corn was easier from the start. Oats sympathied with declines in other grain. Provisions reflected * both hogs and cereals. WHEAT FUTURES DROP SHARPLY Minneapolis, Dee. 10.—(AP)— Wheat futures dipped sharply to: May going to a new low for the life of the option and December holding at a point 1 cent above the old low of $1.08. Stop loss selling developed in May below 1.15. Oats were quiet and easy with other grains. Barley futures dragged with pit support poor. Rye eased with wheat, flaxseed futures were quiet and easy. Cash wheat offerings were ample Safid the demand was quiet to fair. Good quality springs sold fairly well early and turned slow after selec- tions were made. Winter wheat was quict and steady. Durum was slow except for good milling quality, which was scarce. Corn offerings were large and low moisture cars wee firm, the lower grades easy in the range. Oats were quiet and easy except for good to choice. setbacks in te with choice milling quality in good demand. Barley offerings were eatherlay large, and demand was quiet: to fair at 52 to 68 cents. Flaxseed was in quiet to fair demand with offerings moderate. CHICAGO LIVESTOCK Chicago, Dec. 10.—(AP)—(U. S. Renewal of weakness in Radio, Montgomery Ward, Wright Aero- nautical and some of the other high priced specialties turned the general course of prices extremely irregular before midday. In general, most of the high grade, seasoned dividend paying rails and industrials received good support. Call money renewed at 9 per cent and dropped to 8 when a plentiful supply of funds appeared in the market. Banks called about $15,000,- 000 in loans but these were easily bf aah ‘he day’s trade news also was less favorable than usual. The United States Steel corporation re- ported a decrease of 78,080 tons in unfilled orders last month, i probably was due to the mi of a high level of operation in the face of a seasonal slackening in de- mand. The Standard Ojl Co. of In- diana announced a cut of 1 cent a gallon in gasoline prices in Chi- cago, and the reduction was immedi- ately met by its leading competitors. Renewed selling Pressure against the high pe specialties undoubt- cat was eile by the unofficial of widespread. rumors that beset banking support had been provided for the market. Radio was the hardest hit, breaking from an early high of 314, which represented a week-end gain of 18 points, to %, | 275, but it quickly snapped back to 290. Montgomery Ward fell from 342 to 315, Wright Aeronautical from 221 to 196, and National Tea from 380 to 310 while General Mo- tors, Johns Manville, Columbia Graphophone, Packard Motors and Victor Talking Machine fell 4 or more points below their early high levels. Some of today’s selling undoubt- edly represented the liquidation of weakened marginal accounts. Sat- urday’s reaction was so drastic and the tape so late that prices of many stocks were down 5 to 25 points be- fore most traders could act to pro- tect their commitments. Prices of the high grade shares were not disturbed in the late hour by the violent gyrations in the vol- atitle issues. The drop in call money to seven per cent and a resump- tion of pool support resulted in a temporary scramble by shorts to cover. Radio rallied from 275 to 312; Montgomery Ward from 305 to 385; Wright Areo from 196 td 216, and A. M. Byers f:om 152 to 169, Advan over the preceding close were shown by International Tele- phone and Telegraph, which rose 14 points, Bethlehem Steel, Green Cananea Copper, Associated Dry Goods and Atlantic Refining, all up 5 points. Fresh selling then made its app ice, driving Radio down to 290, Montgomery-Ward down to 825, and Wright Aero to 200. The closing was unsettled. Sales ap- proximated 5,200.000. SO.
