ue - @11.50, good and choice (aH weights) 11.25 ‘ 12.00; common and medium 9.00 T. 'HURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1928 WHEAT VALUES RANGE HIGHER Firm Liverpool Quotations, Winter Con@ition, Cause Ascendancy- Chicago, Dec. 6.—(#)—Corn values developed fresh strength today, and did considerable to impart firmness to prices of other grain. Buying of future deliveries in the corn market came largely from yesterday’s sell- ers, and there were also indications of further export purchases of corn both here and at the Gulf of Mexico. Developments regarding farm legis- lation at Washington were being closely watched. Corn closed unsettled, %e to Sc net higher (Dec. 83% to 84, Mch. 87 to %&, May 89% to 78), wheat ‘a@ec to 1c up (Dec. 1.15%, Mch. 1.19% @%, May 1.225 to 4). Oats closed % to lc advanced .Dec. 48, Mch 48%, May 48%). And pro- visions unchanged to 10c down. Unwelcome heavy rains in north- ern Argentina and a forecast that wheat shipments from Argentina would show some decrease account- ed largely today for comparative firmness of the Liverpool wheat market, and helped at times to lift wheat values here. In addition, there were advices that although wheat yields in parts of Australia are excellent the yield in western Australia is very disappointing, and will be 10,090,000 bushels less than expected. Private reports given out in Chi- cago today indicated that 30.7 per cent of the 1928 domestic wheat crop is still on the farms. The total new winter wheat area was estimated at 45,117,000 to 46,610,000 acres, and the present conc ion at 94.9 to 97.3 per cent. These reports failed to af- fect the market, being near to what had generally been predicted. WHEAT DULL; RANGE SMALL Minneapolis, Minn., Dec. 6.—(AP) ~-Wheat was dull within a range of session today. Mild ease prevailed early but the tone turned firm. Oats started easy and firmed up with corn. Barley prices were firm. Rye prices edged higher with offer- ings light. Flaxseed advanced 1@ 1% cents and reacted part way. Cash wheat demand was quiet to fair and offerings were ample. High protein spring wheat was 1 to 2 cents lower and poor off grades were 1 cent lower. Good quality around 12 protein and below was quiet but about steady. Winter wheat was easier with spring. Durum was quiet and steady. Corn was in good demand early, with late demand fair. The basis was firm. Oats were in fair demand and of- verings were light. The basis was firm. Rye was in ‘ight supply, with choice scarce and wanted. Barley was firm at 51 to 68. . Early gains, which ran from 1 to nearly 14 points, were cut down, or wiped out, and a long list of is- sues 88 4 to 15 points below yesterday's final quotations. Tr: ing was only moderately heavy in volume, Marking up of the call money rate to 12 per cent and the firmness of , the time money market at 7% per cent was an important factor in the change in speculative sentiment. Predictions of temporary rates of 12 to 15 per cent, and even higher for call money are heard in some banking quarters because of the heavy holiday demand for funds, coupled with the Dec, 15 tax pay- ments. Early buying operations centered largely in the merchandising and Packard ran up 8 points to a new high at 158% and, then slumped to 152%. Chrysler advanced 4 points to 187% and dropped back to 131%. Indian Motorcycle fell 6 points, Mack Trucks sagged 5 points below yes- terday’s final quotations, and other motors fell back a point or more. Coppers also were hard hit on the reaction before buying support be- came effective. Radio dropped 15 points, Montgomery Ward 121%, Ros- sia Insurance 9; and Victor Talking Machine, Warner Bros., Commercial Solvents, Allis Chalmers, Goodyear, Mexican Seaboard and National Bel- las Hess dipped 4 to 7 points. A. M. Byers ran Seas points to a new high at 206% and then tumbled to 193, Wright Aeronautical soared 18% points to 274% and then dropped back to 262, . New high records were established in the early trading by Atlas Powder, National Tea, The Fair, American Snuff and a sprinkling of low and medium priced issues.
