‘TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1928 ROAD BUILDING PLAN APPROVED Highway Commission Says Graveled Roads Must Be Protected in Future Requests from nine counties for state aid in graveling approximately 270 miles of highway have been ap- proved by the state highway com- mission and included in the 1929 highway construction program, ac- cording to announcement here today. Graveling projects are being sup- ported by the highway commission, ‘Sas only by this method can earth grading previously done be protected and maintained, said J. J. Erma- tinger, commission secretary. y In some counties graveling proj- ects had the preference over grading . improvements in order to properly protect roads already built, Erma- tinger. said. In Logan county all ‘earth grading requests were denied in order to gravel carth roads al-| ready built. Graveling projects approved by the commission and the counties re- questing them are: : Twenty-four miles on U. S. High- way No. 12 in Adams county, four miles on No. 9 in Burke county; 40 miles on No. 5 in Cavalier county; 22 miles on No. 3 in Kidder county; 10 miles in La Moure county; 119 miles in Logan county; five miles in McLean county; 15 miles on No. 6 south from Mandan, seven miles on No. 10 west from Mandan, and 14 miles on No. 10 east and west from New Salem, all in Morton county; and 10 miles on No. 18 in Walsh county. BUTTERFAT HAS 1928 DECREASE North Dakota Cream Station Business Fails Off During Past Year Less butterfat is now being mar- keted through cream stations by North Dakota farmers than form- gerly, John Husby, dairy commission- er in the state department of agri- culture, said here today. He bases this statement on a com- parison of figures compiled for the years 1926 and 1927, and on figures of the first six months of each year of 1926, 1927, and 1928. Figures show that 30,899,385 pounds of butterfat were marketed through cream stations during the calender year of 1926 and 28,517,041 pounds during 1927. In the first six Change in the marketing system of butterfat is the other. F Shortage of forage because of the drought: year 1926 reduced the num- ber of milk cows in the state, Husby said, This caused a decrease in butterfat production which would naturally affect the amount of cream purchased by cream stations. In nearly alt counties of the state ex- cept those most severely affected, however, the number cf milk cows jhave now increased to the number before this wholesale disposal, Hus- by said. Therefore this decreased _butterfat through cream stations is now very nearly eliminated. Creatheries Aid Husby says the principal reason for this decrease in cream station marketing lies in the fact that an- other channel of marketing has been greatly enlarged by the establish- ment of local creameries. ‘I'his en- ables the farmer to bring the raw product direct to the creamery, This is a more efficient manner of han- idling a highly perishable commod- ity, he said. Direct marketing by the farmer eliminates a stage in the butterfat marketing scheme—the cream sta- | tion, resulting in a higher price to the producer and a better product to the consumer, he belives. i The growing popularity of direct marketing by having: creameries es- tablished in each district as it war- rants, instead of the large plant with its contributing cream stations, is the main reason for the falling off of Chevrolet Managers Return from Detroit T. Two Reasons Cited There are two. principal reasons for this decrease, Husby said. A severe drought in 1926 which « materially reduced forage crops in the state and necessitated selling a great many cattle is one reason given by the dairy commissioner.
