ces - THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1928 BIRDZELL JOINS -GROUP SEEKING RHODES HONORS Local Youth Is One of Eight Candidates for Course at Oxford University Grand Forks, N. D., Nov. 15.— Robert Birdzell, son of Supreme Court Justice and Mrs. L. E. Birdzel. Bismarck, is one of eight candidates for the Cecil Rhodes scholarship from North Dakota, agcording to announcement made today. Birdzell is a law student at the University of North Dakota. Other candidates are Fred Hovde, Devils Lake; Richard Heaton, Dick- Upson; Alden Squires, Richard Stur- evant and Paul Yoder, Grand Forks; Howard Stone, Westhope; and Ken- neth Kurtz, Shawnee, Oklahoma. Stone and Kurtz matriculated at Jamestown college, while Hovde is a student at the University of Min- nesota. Other candidates are en- rolled at the University of North Dakota. Hovde is the outstanding athlete of the group, having earned letters in football, basketball and track at the University of Minnesota, He is playing his third season this vear as quarterback of the strong Minne- sota eleven. To be eligible for the Rhodes award one must be between 19 and 25 years of age, and have reached more than the sophomore year in college work. The applicant must have a high scholastic standing, be athletically inclined, in good health, and possess superior qualities of manhood. On these stanadards the committee will make its choice De- cember 8, 1928, and the successful candidate will enroll for a three-year term at Oxford university, England. in October, 1929. The candidate will have a stipend of 400 pounds annu- ly. The award was established by Cecil Rhodes of Kimberly diamond fields fame _to promote better feel- ing toward England and its customs. Annually 26 of the United States are awarded the scholarship, and North Dakota was one of the number chosen this year. Edmond 0. Belsheim, Dickinson, Fy alumnus of the University of ‘orth Dakota, is now at Oxford as the student selected in the 1926 competitions. (g19 Bismarck Nurses Pass in Examinations Nineteen Bismarck nurses passed examinations held at Bismarck last week, Miss Mildred Clark, Devils Lake, secretary of the board of nurse examiners, announced today. A total of 111 nurses passed ex- aminations held during the week at Bismarck and Grand Forks, she said. The Bismarck nurses who passed the examination are Esther Wittich, Lillian L.
