‘WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 81, 1928 ~ LARGE AIRLINE HAY TRAVERSE NORTH DAKOTA State May Be Included “| Route of Planned Transcon- tinental Service Plans for a transcontinental air- line which will pass through North Dakota along the present route of the Northern Pacific railroad are being projected by Universal Air- | Jines, Inc., the state railroad board | was told here today by Mark M.| Hurd of Minneapolis, { Hurd was the only witness at the | hearing by the railroad board on the application of the Mid-Plane Sales | and Transit company of Minneapolis for permission to operate an air) service from Fargo to Beach with stops at Valley City, Jamestown, Bismarck, and other points. The Mid-Plane company also has made application for permission to oper- ate an air service from Wahpeton to the Canadian border and hearing on that matter was held this morn- ing. Application for permission to bperate an airline from Fargo to Beach also has been made by the North Dakota Midwest Airplane company, headed by Adam Lefor of Dickinson and evidence bearing on this application was to have been Seay today. Illness, however, ept Lefor from attending and gis company will be given an opportun- ity to present its data on Novem- ber 8. Hurd told the commission that tonsolidation and mergers are be- {ng made so fast among airplane Dperators that the average air transport pilot hardly knows the name of the company for whom he is. working and predicted that only | two major companies will be in the field within a short time, the prac- tice being to absorb the smaller tompanies which are pioneering in- Hependent airlines. The reason for this, he said, is greater efficiency and economy of operation and the fact that small airlines have trouble in paying their way. The intention of the Universal fompany, which controls the Mid- Plane company and other subsidi- ries, is to organize a network of hirlines covering the country, he said, with a northern transconti- nental line operated from Seattle and Spokane to New York via Min- heapolis and Cleveland. The cross- fontinent trip from Seattle would be made in 36 hours, he said, by Dele and rail, passengers arriving in Cleveland by train in time to take the night train from Cleveland to New York. The trip from North Dakota to New York would take about 25 hours, Hurd said. The Initial rates, he said, would be about 10 cents a mile, but reductions would be made when the volume of. business warrants, His Soman’, he said, plans to bid on airmail contracts when the postoffice department calls for air- BISMARCK TRIBUNE PAGE THRER influence its members by coercion. | to pay all.
