DAIRY PROGRAM ARRANGED FOR SPECIAL TRAIN Exhibit Car Will Show Actual Experiences of North Da- kota Farmer Exhibits, demonstrations and) talks to show how to make more} money with dairy cows will be a part of the program for the Dairy- Poultry Special Train which will make 88 stons in North Dakota from; May 28 to June 30. | “Feeding of milk cows for eco- nomical production, and increasing the production per cow by the prac-| tice of using good purebred bulls and by testing cows and eliminating the poor ones are the subjects about which the program for the special train is being built.” declares J. R. Dice, chairman of the dairy depart- ment at the North Dakota Agricul- tural college. The dairy phase of the program will be handled part of the time by Mr. Dice and the remainder by A. M. Challey, field agent in dairying for the extension division of the college. An exhibit car is being prepared which is based on the actual ex- periences of a North Dakota farmer | over a period of 19 vears in build- Ing up from a mediocre and unprof- itable dairy herd. In a graphic form the exhibits show the farmer started | 10 years ago with poor cows and and poor equipment, and that he was |, using poor feed. Progress Shown Then he purchased a good pure- bred bull and joined a cow testing Bssociation. From the records of the individual cows he found some that were not paying for their keep, and these he sold to the butcher, which left more feed for the better tows, which he found returned him more profit than the original herd. The next year he planted some al- falfa and built a silo, and in a year or two he was making still more money from his cows. By this time the daughters of the purebred bull were freshening, and the cow testing association records showed that they were better pro- dugers than their dams. He pro- duced high quality cream and re- ceived a pzemium for it over ordin- ry market prices. An entire car is devoted to this ‘exhibit, which represents what many tage of feeding alfalfa hay and cor: silage. The records made by the same cows on good and poor feeds | will be presented. Interest in the train which will carry nine cars of dairy and poultry exhibits is very strong throughout the state, according to officials of the Northern Pacific, Soo Line and Great Northern railways, who, with the county extension agents, are now making arrangements for thi meetings. Local committees farmers and business men are plan. ning special celebrations, and indi- cations are that attendance records will exceed the high totals reached for the Better Beef and Better Seed special trains operated during the past two years.
