PAGE EIGHT THE BISMARCK TRIRUNE LAST CHANCE FOR SOLDIERS TO GET ‘BONUS’ Final Date for Making Applica- tion Has Been Set For January 2, 1928 Final date for making application for adjusted compensation, or what is more generally known as the na- tional bonus, has been set for Jan. 2, 1928, This bonus is given to a veteran if he makes application during his lifetime, in the form of a 20-year endowment paid-up insurance cer- tificate. Tho amount of the certif- icate is based upon the service 6, 1917, and July 1, 1919. The bonus rate of pay is $1.00 per day for each day of service in this country and $1.25 per day for each day of | @. service overseas. This amount is|| what is known as the adjusted serv- ice credit and the amount of insur- ance certificate will be approximate- ly two and one-half times the amount | of the original adjusted service credit. If the veteran died before the en- actment of the legislation making this bonus possible, or has died since without making application, then application may be made iby such persons as may survive him, providing that the survivor is either ‘a wife who has not re-married prior to making application, or children under 18 years of age at the time of death of the veteran, or by a mother or father who were wholly or partially dependent on the veter- an for support. All of these applica- tions must be filed on or before cap! January 2, 1928, or the right to file} lets. will expire. Applications received after that date will be held as void. It is believed that there are ap- proximately six thousand applica-|® tions within the state yet to be filed. || The average certificate which has |. been issued to veterans in the state of North Dakota is about $1,000. Using this same basis, it is believed that the value of the adjusted serv- ice applications not yet filed is be- tween $500,000 and $600,000. Forms for filing for the adjusted compensation may be had from the regional office of the United States veterans bureau at Fargo, postmas- ters and American Legion Posts throughout the state. Soo Line Files Suit in U. S. District Court Notice that the Soo Line railroad has filed suit in federal court to prevent the collection of part of the taxes assessed against it this year by .the state board of equalization has been received here by Attorney General George F. Shafer. The suit, which is directed against the state board of equalization and the auditor and treasurer of each county in which the railroad oper- ates, states that the company is ready to pay 70 per cent of the assessment levied against it but asks that state and county officials be enjoined from collecting the re- maining 30 per cent. The cases is based on the same claims as were presented to the Burleigh county district court earlier in the year, the action being brought under a state statute. At that time the district court held that the railroad could not bring an in- Junction action since the state law requires the disputed taxes be paid and an action brought to obtain a ind. Great importance is attached to the case because of the fact that all! railroad property is valued by the state for taxing purposes in the same manner, and success of the Soo Line suit might result in sim- ilar actions by other railroads, i lerful woes .b saldene- Too Late to Classify tistance by keeping the body FOR RENT—One large nicely fur- Build ur resistance nished front room on second! |. up floor.
