PAGE SIX: THE BISMARCK ‘TRIBUNE Bismarck ELI HALFBACK ALMOST SURE OF HONOR ROLL Drury, Spears and Joesting Are Other Leading Candi- dates For Berths BIG THREE OFFERS TWO Tigers Will Find Yale the Toughest Proposition of Year Without Star BY ALAN J. GOULD, Associated Press Sports Editor New York, Nov. 10.—(@)—The abrupt and sensational removal of Bruce Caldwell, Yale’s flashy half- back, from the gridiron picture forces a revision of all-American backfield prospects for 1927. mi it Until ineligibility put the Eli star out of the running, he seemed almost a certainty for any all- American quartet of ball carriers selected. The east has already put forward a number of candidates but Caldwell, on his all-around per- formances, seemed to most experts to head the list and merit the dis- tinction of a place on the mythical all-star cast. It had seemed to some critics that an entirely capable and repre- sentative all-American _ backfield, besides Caldwell, might also include Morly Drury ‘of Southern Califor- nia, Bill Spears of Vanderbilt and Herb Joesting of Minnesota, based on what has taken place so far.,;But it would be difficult to overlook such other aces as Gilbert of Mich- igan, Flanagan of Notre Dame, | Welch of Pittsburgh, Wittmer of Princeton and McCrary of Georgia. There would be no difficulty in filling Caldwell’s prospective post from this. array. e Big Three Stars Marston and Wittmer may be passed over by the experts because they are only sophomores and therefore. considered not quite ripe but that would be about the only ground on which they could be left out of consideration. Both have starred consistently in all their big games so far. Transfer rules of Yale, Harvard and Princeton which bars an athlete | from any sport at’ these colleges if } he has played as much as 3U sec- | onds in that sport for any other college is one of the most drastic in the amateur code. Its object is » to prevent the possibility of any * bidding for the services of an ath- letic star in another college. . Other sports are less particular about transfer athletes. For in- stance, Willie Ritola, the Finnish distance runner, developed his skill in the United States as a resident r here but, heeding the call of his » native land, he went back to repre- sent Finland in the 1924 Olympics. Only last summer, Mexico was rep- resented in the Davis cup tennis competition by Kobert Kinsey, a Californian and former American doubles champion, who became cli- gible to represent Mexico by a com: paratively short residence in Mexi- co City.
