FRIDAY, AUGUST 5, 1997 - Evert Marks New aw Era, Gov. Sorlie Says| is (Continued from page one) in reduced transportation coats and other dollars saved come with it. Roads are not an expense but an in- vestment. i “Within a few short years the value of land in this region should show a material increase by reason | of the construction of this bridge! and the construction of good. roads. “This, in turn, will incredse the tax dupiicate, making it possible for these counties to make other needed improvements without Increasing the tax burden upon-any citizen above what it is now. The state will share in the general prosperity, not only by getting more taxes but by sharing | in the prosperity which improvement Sf conditions in this region will cause. All Will Benefit “By viewing these things as a hole we see that every part of the state will benefit as a result of this major improvement. Taxes collected from the people should be spent for the benefit of the people and when properly administered such is the case, In effect the state government is only a great cooperative enterprise | in which every citizen has a voice| and in which every citizen should) share the burden. Its affairs should | excite the interest of every citizen. “When that condition exists it will he an agency of benefit to all and progress is assured. It has so func- suoned in building this bridge and I Join with the citizens of this region in saying that I am not only happy| but proud.” | Believing that. the construction of| the big four-span bridge is one of the “biggest things” in the history of this part of the state and prom- ises much for its future development, hygsiness men and civic leaders of the region are staging a two-day cclebra- tion which will make the bridge de- dication a memorable affair, Shipping Point Nearer From a commercial standpoint. the bridge is expected to develop both iness and farming interests in this section. With the new bridge, farmers in| McKenzie county ' are brought miles nearer to the railroad than formerly has been the case. Grain grown on the west side of the Missouri river had either to be haul- 1 28 miles or so to the nearest rail- d or ferried across the Mi i river and Sanish. Either process was expensive and slow. fording a new and more rapid ns of transportation the bridge is expected to facilitate settlement of the fertile farm lands of McKenzie county and make it possible for farm- ers to get their supplies more quick iy ani cheaply. Although the formal dedicatory egremony was completed this after- noon, thousands of visitors are ex- pected to remain until Saturday for the sole n which will extend in- to that evening. . Fine aeacauon itself was simple. After a* band concert at 10 o'clock and the singing of Ameria by the as- s€mbly, a speech was made by J. H. Sinclair, congressman from this dis+ trict. This was followed by _ the christening of the bridge by Miss Mariel Sinclair, the congressman's daughter, and the dedicat by Governor A. G. § together with short talks by Lieutenant Gov- ernor Walter Maddock of Plaza, Al N, Nelson, McKenzie county commis- ioner, Frank Vogel of Colehurbor, 4 member of the 1925 legislature, and others. Maddock and Vogel were ieaders of the legislative group which is eredited with obtaining the pas: e of the state appropriation for +t bridge. 3 Indians Have Part In the afternoon the Indians, who still reside in large numbers in this territory, stepped into the celebra- tion picture and visitors had an op- pertunity to hear an Indian orator perform in his native language. He is Chief Bull’s Eye who responded for his people to an address delivered to tfem by Major A. B. Welch, Man- dan, an adopted member of the Sioux tribe. .From now until Saturday night the celebration is expected to be lively but more or less informal. Indian dances and games will be followed hy a baseball game and wild west wae and dancing on the new bridge and at the park pavilion nearby. Un Saturday the band will be kept busy with numerous additional con- certs. There will be another baseball me, a continuation of the rodeo, a@bopiane features and more dancing. BRIDGE 18 TRIHUTE TO EARL EXPLORER anish, N. D. Aug. 5.—/P)—The ion. speech | § million-dollar. bridge across i Capitol Theatr the Missouri river here was dedi- cated and christened today, with tribute being paid to une of te most American exploration — Pierre Gaul- tier de la Verendrye, who with his expedition was the first white man to set foot on what is now the soil of North Dakota. To the top of what is now known as Crow High Butte, a few hundre yards from the new bridge, Veren- arye is believed to have climbed to look down upon the swirling rive | waters, and to scan the western sky line for trace of the much sought waters of the Pacific, Exact Cost Given Four 273-feet truss spans and a 55-foot girder combine, to give the bridge a total length of 1,157 feet, the exact total cost of which was $429,609.70," according to Clifford yonnson, bridge engineer of the ; state highway department, who pre- Pared tne plans tor the structure. With the completion of the Sanish bridge the second structure across the Missouri to be dedicated in North Dakota this summer — a bridge at Williston having been dedicated on July 1—improvements amounting to more than a million dollars have been received by the three counties of McKenzie, Williams and Mountrail. Heretofore the only means of er ing the Missouri here and at, Will ton has been by ferries and b and the new bridges not only will develop’ business and farming inter- ests, it is believed, but also will act as an inducement to tourist travel into the beautiful Badlands regions of the state, ffray Talks C. T, Jaffray, president of the Soo Line, in an address this mornirg told the assembled thousands of the great interest taken by the Soo rail- way in the development of eastern McKenzie county, declaring that prosperity of the region tributary to nish assisted in the welfare of the railroad. J. J. Ermatinger, seerctary of the state highway_commission, who pre- sided at the program, introduced Clifford Johnson, engineer of bridges for the commission; Fredeen of Ryder, one of the earliest supporters of the project; George Shafer, attor- ney general; and C. A. Fisher, state treasurer. A banquet held last evening served as a preliminary event dedication ceremony. NSN ie Collapse of Geneva!
