PAGE EIGHT z if a EERO CLR % Evidence The Federal Specifications Board, which determines specifications for the U. S. Government, omits any ref- erence to “gravity” in its requirements for motor or even aviation gasoline. Refer to technical paper 323A issued by the Federal Bureau of Mines and recognized as an authoritative manual on U. S. Government specifications and the methods for testing liquid fuels. This manual makes no mention of “gravity”—al- though a detailed description is given of the methods for making all approved tests for measuring the quality of a gasoline. Professor Eugene H. Leslie, of the University of Michigan, and a recognized authority, says in his re- cent book, “Motor Fuels”:— “A few years ago the specific gravity of a gasoline was regarded as an important criterion of quality. The discovery of petroleums of new type, the use of crack- ing processes, and the manufacture of various blends introduced so many complicating factors that the grav- ity test has been dethroned and exiled. The futility of gravity tests and the injustices that attend their use, is now generally recognized.” A gasoline with a gravity of 56 to 58 degrees distilled from some crudes may havea range of “boiling points” practically identical with that of a gasoline of 62 to 64 degrees, made from other crudes. The former gasoline may be the better of the two, because of its superior chemical nature. \ OULD you like to know more about gasoline and how itistestedforquality? Much gasoline is offered to motorists as “high test” and no doubt some of it is high in gravity—and yet it may rank very Icw in all tests which actually indicate the desirable qualities in a motor fuel. A superior gaso- line should be of a chemical nature which—regardless of “gra tty” —will give starting, accelerating power, mileage and non-detonating quaiities, to a maximum degree. : What Then IS the Test of Quality? Among chemists, engineers and large buyers, a gasoline is judged by its range of “boiling points” which, regardless of gravity, indicate tendency to form the right firing mixture. The range of “boiling points” indicate those qualities which have the same relation to the burning of the gasoline as paper, kindling, wood and coal have to afire. Too little of paper and the iE the past, “gravity” was rightly used as a measure of gasoline quality, fire will not start. Not enough coal and it will burn up quickly without - giving off much heat. In gasoline; a proper proportion of the lighter elements—those of low “boiling point”—will insure a ready start of the motor, as the paper staz<s the fire. The proper intermediate elements give to gasoline its pick-up, power and mileage as the wood and coal produce a heat-giving, long- An ideal gasoline—exactly the proper range of “boiling paints’! Such has long been the dream of refiners. For years, chemists have striven to perfect such a’motor fuel. One which would embody ALL of the desired ' qualities, without sacrificing one to the other. At last, the goal is reached—the ideal is realized! The Pure Oil Company is now producing, by a special refining process, the one gasoline—Energee DETONOX—which combines instant starting, quicker pick-up, smoother power, greater mileage —all without a knock. Make the Final Test in Your Own Car Fill up with Energee DETONOX —find out for yourself, in actual use, that it meets every motoring need— BETTER! Energee DETONOX Gasoline Is Sold by Authorized ‘ Pure Oil Distributors, Don't be confused by so-called “high test” ‘be assured of actual HIGH QUALITY ~ \
