Scharnowske, a former United States soldier, now employed as a postal clerk at the Bismarck ipostoffice, passed the office of La ger and Nuchols, local attorne; last Monday he noticed a picture the ante-room which recalled excit- ing events in his life, some of which occurred just 21 years ago to the day, on March 7, 1906. It was on that date that Mr. Scharnowske took the original of the picture, the en- largement of which hangs in the of- fice of Langer and Nuchols, Mr. ‘nowske was serving in pines at the time and it was during a three day battle in the island of Jola with a renegade tribe of Moros, native religious fanatics, that -the picture was taken. Moros, men and women alike, had retréated to un extinct volcano, the crater of which formed a natural trench for the group pictured. Sixteen hundred natives were kill- ed in the battle and the bodies, packed eight and ten deep in the crater, are shown in the picture. Twenty-one soldiers were killed and 82 wounded in the engagement. Mr. Scharnowske still possesses the original picture and copies of it are in the possession of several of yhis comrades. The enlargement in j the office of Langer and Nuchols was made by a local photographer soon after Mr. Scharnowske came to Bis- marck, he says. The American troops which’ took part in the battle were under the command of Major Stead- man, who was later in charge of the national guard in North Dakota, and other offieers connected with the | ¥4 campaign were later Fort Lincoln, according to, Mr. Scharnowske. ————————— i NEWS BRIEFS _ | Premier Ferguson of Ontario in- troduces bill for government control Santos, Brazil, from Florianapolis; engine trouble forces $ ancis to stop 250 miles away.
