{ FRIDAY,-MARCH 4, 1 927 TIME BILL 1S OCCASION FOR HOUSE FIGHT: Another Effort to Revive Measure Thursday Fails— May Be Tried Once More Another effort to revive the bill} changing the southwestern part of | the state from mountain to centr: standard time was de at ti Thursday afternoon ion of the | lower house of the state legislature, | sbringing on the sharpest fight of | the day. The bill had previously been killed | and clinched, and an effort to re- vive the bill Wednesday night failed | when its proponents were unable to | obtain the two-thirds vote gecessary to take it from the table, on which it had been laid by the clincher mo- tion. effort to revive, the measure failed for the same reason, the vote being 65 to 43. It would have required 73 votes to bring the | bill back te the floor for reconsider- Backers of the measure were it may mark the closing hours of the sa@ssion to- day, Renner Changes Over The fight was re-opened on motion of Joseph Renner, Morton county, who started out as the principal op- ponent of the bill when it came from » the senate. He explained that, h fears that the railroads would r fuse to change their time to conform to state law if the bill were passed had been allayed and that he now favors it. The Northern Pacific rail- road, the only major line serving the territory, now changes time at the Missouri river. The bill would re- quire the change to be made at the Montana line. A. O. Brown, Adams county, called attention to the fact that the divid- ing line follows the Missourt river which bends westward inxthe north- ern part of the state. The result, he said, is that counties directly north of those which would be affected by the change and fully as far we already have central standard time. Only 13 counties in the southwestern part of the state have Mountain time, he said, and urged that the en- tire ‘state be placed on the game basis. Brown said that all but a few of the representativés from the dis-| trict affected are in favor of the change and asked the support of| members from the eastern half of we state which would not be af-| ected. Slope Solons Oppose Bill I. J. Wilson and 0. C Slope county, Jed the fight against the effort to revive the bill and were joined by Minnie D, Craig, Benson county, who said that chang- ing the time at the state line might result in confusion to railroad men and cause a serious wreck. Following the vote Walter Tester, ark county, charged that the house had failed to observe the will of) jority of the people living in what is now the Mountain time zone. BlG MEETING AT HETTINGER Plan For ‘Alfalfa, Sweet Clo- ver, Corn and Pure-bred Sire Campaigns Given Farmers and ranchers from all over Adams county flocked to Hettinger Thursday to attend the afternoon agricultural development meeting ar- ranged by B, E.
