D., Sept. 9.—Raising three hundred fifty hogs and feed- ing a carload of steers for the mar- ket, milking thirty-five cows with a ‘milking machine, one hundred fif- |teen acres of corn and one hundred acres of barley and oats, is the story this year on the farm of S. 0. Skartvedt and son, Paul, which five years ago was a strictly wheat farm. The barley yielded forty bushels to the acre and some was sold at sixty cents per bushel. A beautiful team of registered black Percheron mares with colts were recently added to the farm equipment, a few hogs being turned off to furnish the cash. This is a striking example of the change in farming methods which is going on in this vicinity, with remarkable success. That has been the attitude of residents of this state for many years. In recent past presidential elec- tions, the difference in the number of votes cast by the Republicans and Democrats has been exceedingly small. Four years ago, when Har- ding carried all the states, except eleven, he did not get as large a percentage of the vote in Indiana as Coolidge did recently in the state fair straw ballot. Harding in 1920 received only 55.16 per cent of the total votes of In- diana, while Coolidge garnered in 62.05, in fact, no presidential can- didate on any ticket has received 62 per cent of the total of the state in the last 32 years.
