/ é DEMAND FOR EXTRA SESSION NOT APPROVED Middlewest Farmers Do Not Join Fhose of Northwest In Their Demands on President SEEKING OTHER WAYS Pinay Is Undergoing Many Changes in Middlewest as New Methods Are \ Adopted ~ apolis, Indiana, © Sept. 21.— no demand among farmers state for an extra session of Congre s to fix the price of any cultural product. There is little n among either politicians ‘mers of the conferences held in the Northwest which resulted in lutions being adopted urging an a session. Farmers in Indiana have no faith in legislative remedies, Apparently they believe that conditions will right themselves. It is a marked changed from the sentiment in the Northwest. There is dissatisfaction and some istress among the farmers. THere been many foreclosures. Few banks have closed, because they have generally been conservative and are strictly supervised. The banks, too, usually are backed by men of wealth in a community and many are will- ing to sacrifice large amounts ‘of money to avoid the stigma of having been an officer or director in a clos- ed bank, he chief reason apparently that farmers do not feel the disturbed Price conditions as keenly as do many farmers in the Northwest is because of the diversity of crops. From his cows, poultry and garden a farmer gets most of his living. He profits ghiefly through cattle ahd hogs, There has been a remarkable Qnerease in dairying in the last few years, and it bids fair to continue to increase, , Not Ready Money Crop Wheat has passed from an impor- tant “ready money crop” a few years ‘o until now it is planted usually only in the order of crop rotation followed. The wheat yield has not been good this year. There is a no- ticeable tendency even to abandon wheat entirely and to ,plant soy beans as a crop to enrich the soil and at ‘the same time fill the place of wheat in the order of crop rota-j tion, Even in so well settled a state} as this—and the same is said to be! true of Illinois and Ghio—farming is, undergoing the same rapid changes that have characterized in- dustry in the last decade, If one method is not successful there is an effort made to adjust the process of farming to meet the situation and to take advantage of new demands for farm products. Indeed, in the envied. For while city people are paying good prices for produce of various sorts the farmer is—they feel—getting his living rather cheap- ly out of\ the Improved roads, extension of electric lights and the automobile ee combined to knit the city and country people closer| together. Many people agree that! under present conditions the farm- er is at a disadvantage as regards prices, although occasionally one! will hear a city resident declare that | the farmer is better off than anyone! else and that he, too, profiteered during the war. Cooperative marketing has made little headway and apparently there is little demand for it. Most farm- ers seem satisfied with the present} system. Some farmers are in diffiqult &r-| cumstances because of | purchase of dand at high prices during the war or heavy purchases of blooded live- stock at big prices, Governor War- ren T, McCray, who had been rated the richest farmer of the state and who owned one of the finest herds of Herford cattle in the world, has been forced to ask aid of his credi- tors because, his friends say, he loaded up with high priced cattle during the war and after-the-war period or sold blooded cattle at tre- | mendous -prices on credit and is un-j able to realize.
