MARY AL- i DEN PRESCOTT | MY DEAR FRIEND: ; A you wished me, I have taken | very good care to anglyze the young woman who is going to marry your sen, Otherwise, I confess, she | would not have interested me much. She invited me to the Country Club ‘for tea; you remember I told you about the invitation in my last Jet- ter. Mary Alden went with me. Dear friend, I hope you will for- give me when I tell you that I am | very much worried about this mar- riage. I could see easily that John and this girl have nothing in common. She is very pretty and conscious ‘of it. She is quite clever and wants you to asknowle?ge it. She is rath- er rude and quite proud of it. She is very fond of beautiful clothes; those he was wearing were much too ‘fine for one in John's circumstances |—and I hate to tell you this— | while we were drinking our tea she jcalmly cpened a gold cigaret case. lighted and snioked a gold-tipped ‘cigarct which had her monogram on it. To say I was shocked would be putting it mildly, I wanted to ask her if she ever had smoked before | John. Surely, Mrs. Prescott, no man | would ask 2 woman to be his wife | whom he knew smoked cigarets, ; even in these lax days. While we were at the Country Club, a very good-looking young man came into the dining room and Leslie's young sister, Alice—who |also was smoking—beckoned him | over. | One could see that this man was | desperately in love with Miss Ham- ‘ilton. He never took his eyes off ‘her. Poor fool, she must ha’ en- couraged him much before. she turned him down for John. LETTER FROM MRS MARY AL- DEN PRESCOTT TO MISS LESLIE HAMILTON MY DEAR MISS HAMILTON: Although you have been so busy that you have had no time to wi to me, I am using the pri being the mother of the man you are going to marry to send you a letter of explanation anent the gilt which I am dispatching to you by express today. It is a first empire desk and has been in our family ever since Lafay ette brought it over as a gift to the wife of my great-grandfather. This désk always has been given since that time to the first daughter in the family, I, how having no daughter, am giving it to you and son. 3 supposed to be the best ex- ample of Napoleonic cabinet work. Indeed, it is said that the first poleon himself gave this desk to Lafayette. There is a tradition to the effect that there is a sceret drawer in it somewhere, but I never have been able to find it. You will see for yourself when you see the desk that there is a great deal of room that is unaccounted for, how to get into it is a mystery to me and I have spent haurs trying to solve it. I never felt justified, how- ever, in having the desk takey apart. T do not know whether your taste runs to antiques, but this is not‘ so very old, you know, not nearly as angient as some of the things that came over in the Mayflower that are in my home and which will be yours some day. I have received a letter from Miss Bradford in which she tells me that she has had a most charming visit with you. I hope that you like her as well as she scems to have liked you, for I know that Priscilla would like to be as great a friend to my ife as she is to him. I shall be in your town the morn- ing of the twen find a moment's in time to come with John during the day I shall be | as happy as it is posible for me to be on the day before the one when I shall be losing:my son forever. Yours very truly. MARY ALDEN PRESCOTT. CITY NEWS | —______—_--_ Undergoes Operation. M. D. Avery entered the Bismarck hospitul today to undergo a tonsi- lotomy operation.
