Feb. 24.—Unless, far-see- ing action is taken by statesmen of ‘the leading, nations of the earth tuo resolve world-wide economic conflicts, another great war for the control of world markets is inevitable, J. Stitt Wilson of Berkeley, Cal, told the Council of Cities of the Methodist Episcopal church. “In the domestic jife of every in- dustrial nation on earth there is to be heard the ominous mutterings of the working classes, as class-strife grows ever more acute and threaten- ing. j “The ruthless passion for gain and economic power, andthe sensualism, refined and gross, that inevitably fol- lows such materialism, has eaten like an acid into {he moral and spiritual fiber of the people. And so-called re- vivals of religion keep safely .off those zones in which great economic wrongs and social injustices are flagrant. ith first supreme duty of the church is to mobilize all her torces to startle the people out of their’ mad rush for gain and power and pleas- ure, to reuse them from their indif- ference and sin, and:to awaken them to a realization that a great peril con- fronts mankind. “The church must christianize our industrial system. | Surely every thoughiful man must eduction of armaments in 2nd ‘limitation of indus ial | tion and some form! is the ab- | AT THE THEATERS | FILM SCENES MADE | IN DEATH VALLEY; Gold Mines, Sage Bush and Cac- tus Background of Picture “Where Men Are Men,” which will be shown at the Rialto theater to- | night is the William Duncan produc- tion in which Edith Johnson is co-star. It is an adaptation of “The Princess of th Desert Dream,” a novelette by Ralph Cummins which appeared in Snappy Stories. Nearly all cf the action takes place in the’Death Valley gpld section of California during the gold fever with rough and ready prospectors.as char- actsts. The title is peculiarly do- seriptive. Scenes of the desert with 1.s cactus and sege brush, of mining shafts, of camps, dance halls and rec- reation resorts are numerous. Some of the most famous locations in California were used, making the production one of scenic beauty as well as of entertaining value. As far as possible, Mr. Duncan used the lo- cations described in’ Mr. Cummins’ story, most of which are almost inac- cessible and rarely visited by tourists. ‘Thus “Where Men Are Men” will give the picture fan a viow of scenery sel- dom seen in films. VAUDEVILLE AT 3 AUDITORIUM MONDAY A sure-fire number to headline the vaudeville bill to be offered at the Auditorium next Monday night will be “Songs and Scenes” with five clev- er people in a pleasing singing act with artistic sets as backgrounds for the singers, who appear in brilliantly colored costumes. The circus is on to- morrow night, also. Already artistic temperament, which, according to Heck, is a high- brow word for pure cussedness, has broken out among the performers. There is great rivalry between those in the main sbow ‘and those ccnduct~ ‘ing the side show. The side show performers assert that there is no comparison between the fun and wonders offered in the sideshows and the-main show, while those performing under the “big top” declare that the great animal act when the Virginia reel is done on horseback, is worth all the sideshows combined. The only way to satisty everybody, the Legion committee has decided, is to advise them to be sure and see both the main show and the side show. One of the most attractive places fess to the crime. Others in the cast are Cleo Ridgely, Casson Ferguson and Wm. Carleton. Poe, nevertheless carry interesting and valuable data to the makers of marine maps and those who seek to make navigation safe. These bottle papers are dropped in the seven’ seas to study the flow of, currents. Thousands of small slips, with instructions printed in nine languages, are sent annually to all mariners, with the request that they be filled out, placed in a well-corked bottle and dropped every now. and ‘then during voyages about the world. The name of the “dropper,” the ship, the date and the latitude and longi- tude are recorded. In another space the finder writes his name, the date and spot in which the bottle was found forwarding the slip to the Hy- drographic office in Washington. The data thus secured is used in checking currents and in correcting nilots’ charts. Sometimea the bot- tles drift for thousands of ‘miles and are years on their erratic cruises, but when returned, the papers inside us- ually carry a message of value to the Hydrographers. Qccasionally there is an unusual tale connected with their discovery. a Tried to “Cash” Chart. Sometime ago a bottle with its pa- ver was dropped in the Ind‘an ocean and picked up in the Red sea off the coast of British Somaliland by a Mo- hammedan named Mihamed Mustapha, who believed the paper of mystic or intrinsic value. After endeavoring to ex- vlain the nature of the find the agent filled oct the blank with the finder’s uame and forwarded to the navy de- partment in Washington.
