THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE PAGE EIGHT PLOWING WELL ADVANCED IN “NORTH DAKOTA A. J. Surratt Believes Last Fall’s| Record Will Be Equalled This Year That North Dakota farmers are get- | ting much fall plowing done and give | Promise to repeating last fall’s rec- | ord along this line, is the information | given out by A. J. Surratt, statisti- | cian for the Bureau of Markets and | Crop Estimates. | In_ practi y all sections of the state fall plowing was given an early start and if favorable weather con- | tinues until att e first week of No- vember Mr. Surratt believes most of | the farmers will have finished plowing | about all the acreage they intend to turn over. H There are, of course, certain sec: | tions of the state where some delay | has been experienced. Among these; are the places where unfavorable | threshing weather kept the grain from being removed from the fields. How- ever, during this weather, those farm- jg ers who did have some fields cleared took advantage of the chance to turn over many acres while not busy threshing. Other instances where plowing has been somewhat delayed are in the po- tato growing districts. This crop be- ing of considerable importance this year and the Handling of it involving a great deal of work, it has naturally prevented other activities, such as plowing, from being done. However, in the matter of potatoes, it was (Mr. Surratt’s opinion that the nearness of a possible heavy frost will necessitate the cleaning up of all po- tato digging in time to permit prac- tically all plowing to be finished if the. complete freeze-up does not occur be- fore the average date. That early fall plowing is a matter of considerable importance is well known. Jt not only makes it possible for ‘early planting in the following spring, but also is 4 means of destroy- ing weeds and the eggs of hoppers HITS DE VALERA London, Oct. 24.—(By the Associat- ed Press.)--Prime Minister [Lloyd George, answering a question in the House of Commons today regarding Eamonn DeValera’s: message to Pope Benedict said the publication of Mr. DeValera’s message especially in! the middle of the peace negowations constituted a grave challenge. The position of the government on the question involved in that telegram hag been made abundantly clear. The uremier continued, wo do not propose to recede trom it and the conference can not proceed to any other basis. Johnny Wilson, middleweight box- ing championship, is left-handed.
