The skulls and partial skeletons found on the Pjelle property were un- carthed when ‘Pjelle decided to cut down an oak tree near his house. Af- ter the tree was felled, Pjelle begaa the work of removing the stump. The roots of the oak penetrated a layer of stone, apparently laid by hand and under this layer the graves of the men were found. A flint arrowhead in the hip of one of the skeletons and evidences of a tomahawk blow on the skull of.another show conclusively that the party was cut down by In- dians, The fact that the bodies were bur- ied in the manner they were found, indicates that the Runestone inscrip- tion was made by this party.
