The state auditing board, it’ was stated after a meeting this week had acted upon 1,150 -claims, .some of’ which were held up for further consideration. There ‘are 14,047 claims “filed to date, and there are 20,038 ‘ex-service men entitled ‘to file claims. Adjutant General Angus Fraser, in a letter on the subject said: “T regret to state that Isam unable to answer the question as to the probable time of payment of a claim filed under the returned soldiers” fund act. A Failure of. Governor Frazier to grasp the situation properly is blam-; ed by many for the long delay in paying the bonus’ voted by the legis: lature. “The ‘simplest and .most effective manner in which the state could have disposed of the matter would have been fo issue’ warrants for the payment, and to borrow money .on the warrants so that the claims! might .be settled without delay,” said one state official, who feels the critic- ism. “The ex-service’ men would get their, money quickly, and the added interest to be paid ‘by the state would not be an excessive burden. Any sol- dier, sailor or marine will tell you that he needed the money just after he got out of service a whole lot nore than“hé needs it now, and he needs it now much more than he will in the future, as'a general rule, “The intent of the law was to pro- vide funds, not.only as a reward for service, but to aid the ex:service man in getting a fresh start and re: cuperating from financial loss which most soldiers suffered: It looks now as if some of the money might be paid to widows and orphans, instead of the ex-service men.” I Sirloin Steak ...
