O’Con- AY FEVER gg Flying Low on Leaving Minne- apolis, Motor Stops Because of | Clogged Feed Pipe and Plane Crashed Nose First to“Earth. Served 3,000. feet high, the first aerial luncheon eaten in North Da- kota was” eagerly devoured yester- day noon by Lieut. J.C. Cameron and his passenger -E.° R. Russell while they were passing over Jamestown enroute to Bismarck to participate in the Wilson day celebration here Wednesday. 3 The story of Lieut.\Gameron’s flight from Minneapolis to Bismarck is a fair example of how aviators ‘trained in the army service assimilated the “yever-say-die” spirit and smashed thru to success. Leaving Minnedpolis 7 o'clock Tues- day morning, in hopes-of reaching Bismarck that night, the birdmen were handicapped by a ‘h@avy storm, fog and strong winds. The rain and fog were so intense that it was neces- sary to fly very close to the ground which is more dangeroug, aviators say, than all of the spectacular stunt} flying they perform. The “ship” had flown about 38!) miles from Minneapolis when at an altitude of 150 feet the motor sud- denly. went dead. Immediately un-! derneath the plane were telephone wires and with its momentum stopped, the aircraft headed straight for the ground, Lieut, Cameron powerless to guide it. ms “Ship” Has Bad Spill. Manipulating the “joy stick” in an effort to prevent a bad spill that might be dangerous not only to the airplane, but to its’ passengers well, Lieut. Cameron endeavored to} make a safe landing, However, with tle. engine stopped, the pilot was powerless to work with his accus- | tomed skill Zand the plane’s wheels | struck: the sodden earth heavily. Stopping practically in the spot where the wheels first touched the earth, the “ship” tilted, buried its nose in the ground and pointed its tail skyward. Neither passenger was injured in the slightest, but an exam- ination showed that the propellor had been broken off and the right wing smashed and the linen covering torn. Wiring to Minneapolis for repairs which quickly arrived, Lieut. Came- ron and Russell hastily put on the new propellor, patched up the broken parts as best they could, sewed up the rents in the linem cover, applied the dope and by 4 o’clock that ‘after- noon the airplane rose gracefully and} headed Bismarckward. By this time, the “Ain had stopped falling, but tHere were still some clouds that interfered with Lieut. Cameron’s-vision. Making a landing at Fergus Falls, Minn., at 6 p. m., the birdmen got a hasty bite to eat LIEUT. J.C.
