ny \ “ .) FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 1019 BURLEIGH CROPS STAND AHEAD OF STATE AVERAGES Much of the Wheat Here Will Grade No. 1 as Against _ No. 3 Elsewhere 15,000 ACRES OF CORN Yield of Maize of Finest Quality and Heaviest in History of County Burleigh county crops are fully as good as any section in the state, and wheat here will test as high, if not higher than any other in North Da- kota, according to George A. Gustaf- son, county agricultural agent. Some of the wheat in the southern portion of the county will grade 'No. 1, he add- ed, while information reaching the county agent's office says that in prac- tically all portions of the ‘state, al- most all wheat will grade No. 3. 15,000 Acres of Good Corn. “Corn is the best crop in the coun- ty, taken a3 a whole,” said Mr. Gus- tatson this morning. “It is in excel- lent condition and will be equal if not better than the normal yield. Inj} 1918 12,198 acres were planted in corn in. Burleigh and this year I estimate the acreage to be more than 15,000. “Most all of the corn is now past danger of frost. Although some dam- age to this crop has been caused by grasshoppers, yet it is not very great. Hay Yield Excellent. 1 “Hay is the next best crop, I be- lieve. It will yield about 85 per cent of normal. crops in the county today are approxi- mately: Pasture, 80 per cent; wheat, 63 per cent; oats, 60 per cent; barley, 63 per cent; rye, 7-bushels to the acre; potatoes, 83 per cent;, flax, 60 per cent. these figures are a little low. As a whole, crops are much better than they appeared to be a month ago. “In the northeastern part of the county the wheat crop is 50 per cent of normal. Dry weather and rust, par- ticularly the latter, have made inroads in yield. Corn is very good, but there is not a very extensive acreage of this crop in that section. Oats will be. about 60 per cent of normal, fl: is good, better than was expected. House for Sale Am offering house of five rooms and bath, trees close in, modern except heat. The crops were a little further advanced and therefore were able to resist the rust better, Rust has caused a cer- tain amount of damage there, but not as much as in the eastern part. Southern Half Best. “The entire suuthern half of the county is better than the northern portion, The wheat is better and has escaped a large part of the damage of early rust. ‘Corn is’ exceptionally good there, but the oats crop is quite Barley will be about 70 per cent nor-| manure which will greatly fertilize the soil, Another feature is that it is the best prevention against grasshoppers, as ft plows up and destroys eggs al- ready deposited and prevents eggs be- ing laid, as grasshoppers wilknot de- posit their eggs in plowed land. This has been proven conclusively this year, for farmers who plowed their lands deep last fall did not suffer from grasshoppers very much, except- ing those that got into their fields from places where fall plowing was not practised, “Plowing in the fall also turns up the soil to the sun light which re- freshens and enlivens it and land that is plowed now will retain a great deal of moisture which will be beneficial to crops in a dry season such as we had this year. Jn, fact it is almost as good as summer plowing.” - ‘Lieut, Belk ‘Home. Lieut. L. ‘H, Belk, son of Capt. John Belk, and one of Bismarck’s best known young men, is home after two years in the service. Lieut. Belk went from Elsmarck to Camp Dodge, where he spent eight months in train- ing. He then was transferred to Camp Lee, Virginia, where he won hig commission, He went to France with thé ‘309th engineers and spent more than a year at the front, returning to America, on) July 18, and to his favor- ite spot in Ameriea last Tuesday, Tribune, Want, Ads bring. results. MOTHER'S. FRIEND FOR © Expectant Mothers MAKES THE CRISIS EASIER The conditions of other; In some instances, perhaps, | ‘ at Less Than Wholesale Cost i low. This is due to the dry weather more than anything else. Flax will be about 75 per cent of normal and is greatly improved since the ‘recent rains. Potatoes are good and improv- ing. The hay yield on the high land is excellent, but that in the river bot- toms is not so good this year. “There is a great deal of fall plow- ing going on in the county at pres- ent, which is a sign that next year's crops should be very good. M. J. Me- Carthy, a farmer seven miles south- east of Bismarck, has 80.acres in red macaroni wheat which is almost free} from rust and will make an excellent yield., This type of wheat seems to withstand rust better than other grades. His corn crop is excellent and he attributes the success of his crops to the fact that he plows 7 1-2 inches deep. BROWN & JONES Q.S. 8S. We, like every other retailer in Bis- | marck, will welcome this investigation, as. we know there | was never a time since we have been in business where i the margins were as close as they are today. In fact they are.so close that we have wondered how we were to con- tinue in business and still sell at prices that we are mak- ing.. We could save alittle were we to get cash for our goods, for by so doing we could pay cash and save on an average 2 percent that we are allowed to take off on our purchases. Then again we could save another 3 percent for bad debts for to be as careful as we can we meet losses. Then again we could save paying interest which is quite an item; then the extra expense of collecting we could save. All this we give to our customers and still make as much as we now do. We have thought this over very carefully and will, commencing Monday, August 18th, adopt the cash plan. On some items there will be no change in prices and others, wherever it is possible, we will change our prices so that on an average our customers will save from 10 to 20 percent.
