FIVE MILL OITY MEN INDICTED IN PAKE RACE GAME Men Who Got $1,000 From Al- dred Potts of Steele Held by Grand Jury Minneapolis,;(Minn., Aug. 15.—Five indictments today stand against three men, alleged to have been implicated in swindling Alfred Potts, Steele, IN. D,, out of: $1,000 by a fake horse race game, and spiriting him out of the state when he was under subpoena to testify before the grand jury. John Christianson is under indict- ment charged with swindling. Potts July 10. A second indictment charges Christianson with dissuading Potts from. appearing. as, a witness against him. Samuel Leff, St. Paul tailor, al- so is under two. indictments, one. charging that he bribed Potts with $500 to leave the state, the other that he induced Potts to alter his testi- mony, should he ‘be called ag a, wit- ness. The fifth indictment was re- turned, against “Edward Nettleson,” described by ‘Potts as partner to Christianson in the alleged swindle. x Whole Story Told, Potts is said to have told the whole story. of the horse race that never was run, of the bets that never were Doctor Tells How to Detect: Harmful Effects of Tobacco Try These SIMPLE TESTS New York: Doctor Connor, formerly of | Johns Hopkins. hospital says: Many men who smoke, chew or snuff incessant- ly and who are seemingly healthy are suffering from, progressive organic all- ments, Thousands of them would never have been afflicted had. it not been for the ‘use to tobacco, and thousands would soon get well if they would only. stop the use of tobacco, The chief habit forming prin- ciple of tobacco is nicotine, a deadly pol- son which, when absorbed: by the system, slow)y affects. the nerves, membranes, tis- gues, and: vital organs, of the body. The harmful effect of tobacco varies and de- pends: on circumstances. . One will be afflicted: with. general debility, others with eatarrh of the throat, indigestion, con- stipation, extreme nervousness, sleepless- ness, loss of memory, lack of will power, mental confusion, etc. Others may suffer. from, heart disease, bronchial trouble, hardening of the. arteries, tuberculosis, blindness or even cancer of the common affliction known. as tobacco. heart. If you uge tobacco in any form you can easily detect the harmful effects by making the following simple tests. Read aloud one full page froma book, If, in the course of: reading your voice becomes. muffled, hoarse and indistinct, and you must fre- quently clear your throat, the chances are that your throat is affected by. catarrh and; it may be the borinning, of more ser- joug trouble. Next, in the morning be- fore taking your usual smoke, walk up | three, flights. of, atair at a regular pace, then. atop, If you find that you are out of breath, your heart beat is forced, trembling. or irregular, you may be @ victim of functional or organic heart trouble, If you feel that you must smoke, chew or snuff to quiet your nerves, you are a slave to the tobacco habit, and are positively poisoning yourself with the deadly, drug, nicotine. In either cage. you. have just two alternatives—keep an. with the self-poisoning process irrespective of the dangers and suffer the consequences, or give up the habit and escape the dan- gers, You, can overcome the craving. and stop the habit in a very short ‘time by using the following, inexpensive formula, Go to any drug store and ask for Nicotol tablets, take one tablet after each meal, and in a comparatively. short time you will have no desire for tobacco, the crav- ing will have left you. With the nicotine oigon out of your system, your general health will quickly improve. Note—When asked about Nicotol tab- lets, one of our leading. druggists said: “Tt ig truly a wonderful remedy for the tobacco habit; away ahead: of anything we have ever sold before, We are au- thorized by the manufacturer: to refund the money to every, dissatisfied, customer,, and ‘ve would not permit the use of our name unless the. remedy: possessed un- usual merit.” Nicotol, tablets are sold in this elty under an tron-clad money- back guarantee by all the up-to-date druggists, including Lenhart’s and Jos. HORSE HERDS “Helena, Mont., Aug. 15.—Washing- ton dispatches carry discouraging news, for those, who hoped to see the Montana wild hors converted into meat for hungry Europe. American commercial attaches have forwarded from France andi Belgium to the American capital data indicat: ing that the ‘expected market does not exist. In' the first: place, the people will not eat frozen horsemeat. In the seéc- ond place, horses consigned to the butcher must be slaughtered, within the cities or districts in which they are to ‘be consumed. There is still another plan—to ren- der the wild horse for his. products and sell the meat for fertilizer. This, it is said, may prove feasible. The wild horse has been a problem in this state for some years. The an- imals number hundreds of thousands and consume a vast amount of range. There is not profit in rounding up the beasts, since they cannot be sold, except 2 rare few, Hunting them, as well, is no chile’s play. They are fleet and wary and a hunter on a horse has little chance to overtake them. Yet the beasts must go. Stockmen are determined on that. The matter was recently discussed in a state con- vention of the stockmen’s association and it was stated that tremendous herds of cattle and sheep would be maintained on the grass the wild horses eat. The beasts probably are descend- ants of Indian horses. They are of the. poorest stock and. are difficult to domesticate and almost . worthless is based was, written. by.
