PAGE 6 BISMARCK DAILY TRIBUNE "SQUIRREL FOOD WOULDNT OTTO AUTO STOP LF WILL GLOSE Decision Reached by Federal | Representative Meets With Condemnation by Farmers Because the il and state gov- ernments have failed to provide suf- ficient appropriations for the mai tenance of the United States employ- ment agencies in this state, the Bis- marck office will undoubtedly be ed this week. This decision was ved at late yesterd ference between A. J. Washington, representing ployment ice, George N. ton, secretary of the Commercial] clu and Guy Fox, in charge of the} Bismarck employment office. Commissioner Agriculture and} labor J. N. Hagen has be2n made fed- after a con-| Sullivan from the em- Kenis- ment of $60 month for the ment service's work in North According to Mr. Sullivan, this will permit the maintenance of only one oifice and that will be located at Far- £0. Resent Washington Attitude. A great deal of bitterness is felt among loca] business men and farm- ers in this section over the decision of the bureau's Whshington representa- tive in ignoring Bismarck’s claims for an office. It was pointed out that Bismarck was the most logical lador center in the state at this time and that this city should have the em-; ployment office rather than Fargo. Arguments Favoring Bismarck, Some of the arguments in support of Bismarck’s claim for this office are as follows 1. It is the logical labor center of the state. 2. It has a much population than Fargo. 3. ‘Fargo is situated on the eastern ‘border of the state and will be un- able to be of any ance to the farmers in the middle and western part of the state. 4. Since the crops in eastern Mon- tana have been burned up, all of the farm labor from that section comes directly to Bismarck looking for work, 5. The farmers have been securing all of their harvest and farm hands through the Bismarck office and have looked to this office to supply their needs. 6. The business men of Bismarck, in order to help the farmers to handle their crops, have kept the local of- fice open for over three months at considerable expense to themselves not one cent of which will ever be re- turned. 7. The business men of Fargo kept that office open only one month and during the past two months no as- sistance has been given the farmers in securing labor. 8. The work of the Bismarck of- fice has been so organized and s} temized that the data now in its fi is worth a considerable fund if used immediately, but will soon become Hoptnlees upon the closing of the of- Ice, Farmers Want Bismarck Office. 9. The farmers themselves are demanding that the Bismarck office remains open, 10. With the possidle exception of the period when the bureau was pla- cing the returning soldiers, the work of the ‘bureau ‘has reached the height of its usefulnss at the present mo- ment. It has received calls from farmers in the western part of the state during the past three days for more than 100 farm and harvest hands and unless the Bismarck office is able to remain open and. pravide this labor crops in the middle and western part of North Dakota will suffer and the farmers face a consid- erable loss. It is de- 3) clared that the sudden explo- sions have the same effect as bursting shells and machine gun fire on the shattered nerves of returned soldiers suffering from shell shock. The authorities say that many shell-shock victims who had vir- tually recovered have had to re- turn to hospitals as the result of the sudden “pop-pop” of a motorcycle engine behind them.
